Part 2

Respond the following two questions about the reading “Good Lady Ducayne” (would be attached in files)

  1. how does this story seem to map a horror story or s sensation story on a realistic/conventional Victorian plot? Consider the parts of story or qualities (like narrative techniques, plot events, language qualities, etc) that seem like other Victorian stories “A Manchester Marriage”? Where does it shift (i.e. where do you start to notice this isn’t a regular marriage plot or coming of age story?)

  2. “Good Lady Ducayne” has often been considered a Vampire story, but is it? (there are no literal vampires after all). Discuss the whether or not this should be classified as a vampire story? Consider the socio economic implications of the story, as well as it is commentary on Victorian science and medicine (particularly blood transfusions)

There are several Victorian themes present in this story, including The British Empire/Imperialism (England’s relationship with India), the withering landed upper-classes + shifting inheritance laws, and marriage politics. Choose one of these themes and discuss where it is present (plot events), how it is used (in terms of forwarding the plot and in terms of establishing the story’s commentary on these issues). Be sure to identify specific passages and parts of the text.

Detective fiction/sensation fiction or popular literature as a whole is often considered to have less critical, cultural, or literary value.
