John Carroll has been referenced of being a pioneer of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). He was one of the early developers that was present in the 1980s. He was engaged in computer science for cognitive science and human factors engineering. (Olive, 2018)

He started off by studying mathematics and computer science and then moved into psychology and language. He completed his Ph.D and went to do research for IBM and founded the User Interface institute. In 1994 he became the department head of computer science at Virginia Tech. Then ended up at Penn State in 2003. He is currently a faculty member at Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology. Is a distinguished professor and co-director, with professor Mary Beth Rosson of the College of IST’s Laboratory for Computer Supported Collaboration and Learning, as well as the director of Penn State’s Center for Human Computer Interaction. (Olive, 2018)

There was a human interaction problem in the early days of computer development as until the late 1970s the only people who were using computers were those that were professionals in the field or those that used computers as a hobby. When computers started to include both personal software and personal computers that led to the opportunity of having anyone globally to be able to use them. To solve this problem Carroll developed 2 design strategies in the early 1980s. The first was the minimalist model and was supported by research that discovered users are discouraged by too much of the wrong information vs having too little information. His recommendation was to present only the information that the user needs. The second was a scenario based design that focused on the patterns of human activity should be the primary representation in the design. This was complex due how a person is going to interact with a new system and that the primary focus of how the system is developed and analyzing scenarios of how a person would need to use that specific system. These two strategies have impacted how new systems are were developed. (Olive, 2018)

“Carroll has written 250+ technical papers, 25+ conference plenary addresses, and 13 books. He sits on 10 editorial boards for journals and handbooks. He is the current editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on Computer- Human Interaction (ToCHI). He has won the Rigo Career Achievement Award from ACM (SIGDOC), received the Silver Core Award from IFIP, and is a member of the CHI Academy. In 2003 he became the fifth recipient of the CHI Lifetime Achievement Award, the most prestigious research award in HCI.” (Morgan Claypool) “The CHI Lifetime Service Award is given to individuals who have extended influence and impact on the growth of SIGCHI and the professional HCI community.” (Moran, 2002) He was named as an Honorary Follow of the Society for Technical Communication in 2015 for his work in minimalism.
