Introduction to Terrorism

Terrorist Incidences

One of the domestic pre-9/11 terrorist events is the bomb that exploded in Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. This incident that was considered to be a terrorist attack event occurred on 27th July 1996 during the middle of a concert that was happening during the Summer Olympics (CNN Editorial Research, 2020). The impact of this incident included the death of one person, another person died of a heart attack as a result of the explosion, while scores of people were injured. The CNN established that Eric Robert Rudolph, the bombing expert, was later arrested in North Carolina in the year 2003 (CNN Editorial Research, 2020). Rudolph had been indicted in 2000 regarding the Atlanta bombing as well as other numerous other bombings. For example, Rudolph was connected to an attack at an abortion clinic that claimed the life of one person. Currently, Rudolph is serving four sentences consecutively in prison in addition to 120 years for the attacks he is linked to (Hesterman, 2019).

One of the domestic post-9/11 terrorist events was the twin bomb blasts that exploded close to the finish line during the Boston Marathon. According to the CNN Editorial Research (2020), the twin bomb blasts killed three people and wounded more than 260 people. Tamerlan Tsarnaev is one of the people that were suspected to be connected to the bombs but was killed after an encounter with the police on April 15th, 2013. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a brother to the suspect that was killed by the police, was also a suspect to the bomb attacks during the Boston Marathon. He was arrested by the police and charged for using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction that led to death in addition to one account of using an explosive device to maliciously destroy property which resulted in death (Clark, Doyle, & Stancanelli, 2020). On June 25th, 2015, Dzhokhar was given the death penalty.
