Answer the following questions for novel “Dracula” by Bram Stoker Chapter I to VII (total seven chapters), and also reading the material named Appendix B and Appendix C as reference. (Needs 350-500 words for 4 parts totally)

Part 1:

What are your reactions to the beginning of the novel? What parts did you enjoy? What parts confused you? Why? What are some themes, conflicts, or symbols (etc.) you see emerging?

Part 2:

After reading the supporting material page 3-9 (would be attached in file)and the book, respond:

How does Harker mirror this genre of the travel narrative--which customs does he describe? How does he account the customs, habits, or wildlife? Where can we see Gerard’s influence on the opening chapters? What is the point of using this genre to document his experience in Transylvania and the count? Does it make it more believable? Why present a record of his time in Transylvania?

Be sure to discuss this partof the novel's relationship to the materials in Appendix B (attached in file)

Part 3:

The supporting material in file discussed the opening chapters of Dracula as taking the form of the travel writing genre, but Harker’s time in Transylvania continues, his diary/record of his visit increasingly becomes a narrative documenting the count’s evil plans and maltreatment of him.

Create a map or timeline that explore's Jonathan Harker's time in Transylvania and how it becomes a narrative of horror rather than one documenting his exploration of a new country and culture. The should incorporate visuals as well as text (these visuals can be your drawings or images you find elsewhere). If you choose to hand draw/write the map, be sure the picture you take is legible. The map should include a passage to support each point on it.  This will also serve as practice using different modalities to comment on a text.

After completing the map, respond the these two questions:

  1. How does Jonathan’s narrative become one of horror? What happens to him in this section? How is the count maintaining control of him/ his power?

  2. What does the significance of knowledge/data collection seem to have on this novel so far? Consider what Jonathan uncovers and how that helps/hurts his ability to escape and/or how the recording of information.

Part 4:

In the first seven chapters’ reading, Jonathan Harker says: "It is the nineteenth-century up-to-date with a vengeance. And yet, unless my senses deceive me, the old centuries had, and have, powers of their own which mere "modernity" cannot kill" (67). What does Harker mean here? How does this set up the tension between modernity and history in this novel? Consider the references to technology so far, as well as the references to antiquated modalities and traditions.
