Discussion Question 5 Considering the various learning styles and education levels of your selected community, explain your selection of teaching materials. How do they cater to or possibly impede the

Running head: SELECTION OF TEACHING MATERIALS 0

Response 1

My teaching presentation is derived from the community health assessment that was conducted. The assessment revealed that obesity is a major health concern in my community, both for school age children and young adolescents, as well as adults. Prior to selecting my teaching materials, I had to assess the preferred learning styles of the audience members to ensure they would be engaged in the presentation while understanding the material that is being presented to them. Why is this important? People learn in different ways. And depending on how they learn can determine their comprehension of the material and more importantly, help then retain what they have learned (Educational Connections, 2020). Some people learn through auditory (listening) methods, while some may prefer visual learning, and others may prefer to learn in a kinesthetic (hands on) way (Educational Connections, 2020). There are various types of learners that will be in the audience. Therefore, my teaching materials will include a mixture of learning styles.

My presentation will begin with a PowerPoint presentation that will be displayed on my laptop computer. I do not plan on making the PowerPoint lengthy, but I do want them to know statistics and the high-risk health conditions that accompany obesity and being overweight. because I want to actively engage them in the learning process and do not want to lose their attention. I have also printed out some nutritional educational pamphlets form the Centers for Disease Control and prevention website. I intend on having fresh fruits and vegetables on display, as well as having packages of processed foods and sugary beverages. These will be used to show the nutritional contents on them. I have also printed out numerous sample nutritional labels to pass out to the members so I can walk them through how to properly read them. I plan on displaying the infographic that will be made this week as well. I think that these methods will be beneficial to all the audience members and will not impede their comprehension of the presented material. I will hold a portion of time at the end of the presentation for questions. I may add in some more educational pamphlets for them to take home but am still working on the finishing touches. I am hoping this will be the best method for implementing the project.

Remember when you were in school and you had to cram hundreds of pages of textbook content into your brain before any major test? If you were like most students, you and your friends probably built all sorts of strategies to make the grade. Perhaps you have developed flashcards, modifications, or complex mnemonic devices to document your teachers' lectures. You may have been talking to your classmates on the correct method — but the truth is that, when it comes to learning, one size does not fit all.

Somebody with a visual style likes things that can be seen or observed, like images, illustrations, exhibits, presentations, handouts, movies, photography, etc. Those people will use statements like 'show me' and 'let us look at this.' After reading the directions or meeting someone else, they are better able to do a new project before they begin. These are the people who use the lists and written instructions

Anyone with the auditory style prefers to transfer data via listening: to spoken words, to themselves and others, to sounds and noises. These individuals would be willing, after listening to an expert's directions, to use terms like "Tell me," "let us chat about it" and do a new job better. Those are the people who embrace the telephone and can remember all the lyrics of the songs they hear!

Someone with a kinesthetic learning style prefers to experience physically-touch, feel, hold, do, practice. These people will use sentences like "let me try," "how do you feel?" 'The best way to carry out a new task is to continue and test it and learn as you walk. Those are the ones who want to experiment and never first see the instructions!

I think that the way I will approach this project and the material I will use will cover all three ways of learning I will have visual aids, I will be explaining everything and I will have hands-on material also.
