Dracula Project
Explanation
The novel is done in an innovative journalistic style, so I wanted this project to reflect
that by also having a journalistic element. I, personally, believe Mina is the most important
character within the novel, and I wanted to center this project around that idea. I have done an
article in a made -up newsprint that is a feature on Mina Harker in her older age. I have taken
artistic and creative liberties in creating the dialogue she gives but brought in references to the
actual Dracula text to give it credibility. Mina represents Bram Stoker’s idea of what the “New
Woman” is combined with traditional Victorian ideals, all to combine his ideal Victorian
woman. I reflected that idea but wanted to emphasize Mina’s role as a free -thinking female.
Without her efforts throughout the story, I don’t think it would have been possible for the
vampire hunters to defeat Count Dracula in the end. I think that it is because of her unique
mindset, as compared to that of Lucy’s, that made her the ulti mate heroine. It is very interesting
to be able to see her personal account of some of the events, through her journal entries.
However, there are certain scenes that we are not able to hear from her own voice about, that I
believe are critical in seeing h er character develop. The most important, to me, is the scene when
she is forced to drink Dracula’s own blood, because it is unlike any other action carried out by
the Count up until that point, and she is the only character to endure that, so that is the scene of
question in the interview.
Mina’s story is inspiring, and I think that idea is also translated through the idea of her
being able to share it through a media outlet. It is experiences and representations of the new age ideas that Mina embodies th at have catapulted feminist movements forward throughout the years
and led society to where it is now. I like to think that if Mina Harker was a real person, she
would have been an activist we read about in history books, so I gifted her that through this
project.
