COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1) Describe aging as a developmental process determined by biology, behavioral choices, social roles and opportunities, and cultural values.

2) Identify common myths and stereotypes about aging, mid-life and older adults, and the impact of ageism upon the aging process.

3) Identify normal biological changes of aging and their implications for disease risk, environmental and psychological adaptation.

4) Use gerontological concepts to describe psychosocial adaptation of the aging process.

5) Think critically about social and economic factors that contribute to wellness in mid and later life.

6) Demonstrate heightened awareness of one's own background and experiences as it relates to aging and demonstrate increased sensitivity toward older people.

All objectives align with Lehman College General Education Distribution Areas as follows:

Area I: Individuals and Society, Objective 3: An understanding of how individuals learn, develop, form personalities, participate in social interactions, and solve problems, including an appreciation of individual differences, disorders and neurological development;

Area V: Comparative Culture, Objective 3: Interpret intercultural experience from their own perspective and multiple worldviews and demonstrate ability to act in a supportive manner that recognizes the feelings of another cultural group.
