The economic interest is bringing many Latin American countries closer to China. The Chinese strategy of influencing countries with economic cooperation helps portray China as a country that offers wealth opportunities (Yu, 2015). China demonstrates its commitment to creating a strategic partnership with Latin American by persistently extending its economic and political involvement in the continent. China has dramatically increased trade and investments with Latin America, which historically has had very little interaction. They have gone from having an almost insignificant economic existence in Latin America to replacing the United States as the number one trading partner with some countries in the region (Ellis, 2011).

China also has expanded its military ties with Latin American countries. Their engagements in the region have developed through all levels, from senior military officials meetings to the lower-level military to military interactions while increasing the volume of arms sold in the area (Ellis, 2011). Chinese trade increased in Latin America from $17 billion in 2002 to $315 billion in 2019, with a goal of $500 billion by 2025 (CRS report, 2020).

These actions give China leverage over its Latin America's partners and helps China gain an economic foothold and buy political influence while rising as the global strategic power. China's economic advancement and military engagements within the Latin American region constitute a threat to the U.S. partnership with Western Hemisphere countries and our national security interests.
