Washington Heights is a neighborhood in the northern portion of the New York City borough of Manhattan. Washington Heights is part of Manhattan Community District 12, and it primary zip codes are 10032, 10033, 10040. The health of immigrants community such as washington height is increasingly reflected upon the health of nyc as a whole. My findings indicate severe economic and social disparities between Washington Heights residents and their New York City peers.

  1. Describe the cultural context of the neighborhood, including background information on its physical location and its residents as it relates to this health profile (e.g., age, sex, race, immigration status, other SES data, etc.):

The cultural context of the neighborhood has a population 195,830 individuals in Washington Heights and from doing research Latinos are estimated to comprise 72% between the ages of 25-44 of the population in washington heights followed by whites 17% ages 45-64, Blacks 7% ages 18-24, Asian 3% ages 0-17 and others 1% age 65 and up.Correspondingly to other NYC neighborhood Washington heights has seen rapid growth in it foreign-born population in the past 15 years even with 37% English Proficency then New York City.

Asthma & the Environment: In Washington Heights Child asthma emergency department visits 223.3 and hospitalizations 32.4 ages 5-17 and asthma among public school children ages 5-14 84.3 rates are much higher than Adult asthma in emergency department visits 90.4 and hospitalizations 9.8 ages 18yrs and older.

  2. Climate & Health: In Washington Height there climate compared with other nyc neihborhoods is better because of the area they are located at and there percentage is 27.1, ozone 27.7 and there spatial average 94.0 and when it comes to the health outcomes compared to other nyc neighborhood is worst because of there heat stress with 6.6 emergency department visits and Asthma emergency visits 223.3.

  3. House & Health: From the neighborhood profile Washington Heights compared with other nyc neighborhood is worst because of their homes with mice and rats with a percentage 29.3 , roaches 34.7 which is a potential asthma trigger and is not good for your health.

Outdoor Air & Health: Although in Washington Heights Outdoor air quality is average with other nyc neighborhood it can still cause health problems such as asthma among children under the age of 18 and people with pre existing health conditions. Washington Heights has a pm2.5 percentage of 7.1 which is in the middle with other neighborhoods

  5. Overall Community Health: Overall Washingon height rates there health to be excellent but from research people in washington Heights live in poverty which limits healthy lifestyle choices and makes it difficult to acess health care and resouces that can promote health and prevent illness.

  1. What disparities exist in the above health data when compared to NYC health outcomes?

When compared to NYC health outcomes Washington height has a much higher percentage rate 74% with disparites which in term stating that washington height is worst than other NYC health outcomes when it comes to Housing, Education, Employment, Health.

  1. What are the potential determinants of these disparities (be sure to identify all potential biological/physical, environmental, social/behavioral, and/or others)?

Housing: The percentage of renters with home maintence defects in there homes (including Mice, rats, leaks and mold compared to other Nyc neighborhood. Education: The percentage to graduate college at a average of 68% is less compared to Nyc neighborhood overall average 75%. Employment: The unemployment rate is also higher than citywide average of 9%. There are also Health disparities in washington heights which are Obesity 26%, Diabetes 13% and Hypertention 28%.

What are possible potential interventions for addressing the determinants of these disparities (be sure to consider multiple levels of influence [e.g., individual, interpersonal, community, institutional/organizational and/or public policy] as well as primary, secondary and/or tertiary level interventions)?
