Nurse Leadership in the age of Globalization

Nurse Leadership in the age of Globalization

Globalization, or the increased interconnectedness and interdependence of people and countries, is generally understood to include two inter-related elements. These elements include the opening of international borders to increasingly fast flows of goods, services, finance, people and ideas; and the changes in institutions and policies at national and international levels, to facilitate or promote such flows (WHO, 2020). Making the world more connected, innovative and diverse can therefore have exponential impacts on healthcare and biomedical technology and can force us to capture economic and social changes within our global society. Some changes include those that have surfaced as a result of the recent impact of COVID-19.

Due to Globalization and changes in healthcare policies, nurses are required to frequently adapt to change. Increasing decision-making capacity, enhancing knowledge and skills, in order to provide complex high-quality healthcare to diverse populations, are responsibilities of each nurse. In the age of Globalization, Nurse Leaders are also required to view the healthcare environment from a global perspective, while acting as change agents in the development of health systems, best practices, research, innovative technological advancements and active participation in health policies.
