World Bank's Enterprise Surveys (Links to an external site.) offers an expansive array of economic data on 135,000 firms in 139 countries. Choose the DATA tab at the top navigation bar first. The data is presented in a variety of ways useful to researchers, policy makers, journalists, and others.  An Enterprise Survey (Links to an external site.) is a firm-level survey of a representative sample of an economy’s private sector. The surveys cover a broad range of business environment topics including access to finance, corruption, infrastructure, crime, competition, and performance measures.

  1. Using the “Indicators tab” (Links to an external site.) (versus the Survey Data Sets Tab) choose your country (India) within the “Economy Snapshots”.  Next, go to “About This Survey Tab” and  view the “Characteristics of Firms Surveyed”  for your country (India). For example, the Business Sector (# of manufacturing, retail & other svcs), the Firm Size and the Location. This will give you valuable data on firms in your own country. Record this data.

  2. Next, go to the “Obstacles For Firms” tab and note the top ten Business Environment Obstacles for firms within your country (India). (i.e., tax rates, political instability, labor regulations, etc.) Record this data.

  3. Next, scroll down the page to the horizontal tabs including: Corruption, Crime, Finance, etc. Choose “No Subgroups” from the “View Data by Firm Subgroups” dropdown box. Next, choose the “Innovation and Technology” tab and report on the data for your country (India). Download the data into Excel from the options available. (Print, Share or Excel)  Next view the “Infrastructure” tab and download into an excel file.  Finally, go to the “Trade” tab, and download the data into an Excel file.  Summarize (points 1 - 3) the data found for your own country (India) (i.e., and upload the 3 Excel files for your own country (India) within the Assignment Page, or save as one document).
