History 123 (Spring 2021)
Part I (the big essay):
Please answer the following question in an essay you write on the paper provided.
The Question: Between 1450 and 1700 the world became more globally linked; who created these new global links and how did this new globalization impact the four major areas of the world, including Europe, the Americas (Latin America and North America and both pre-Columbian and Colonial Americas), Africa (treat Sub-Saharan Africa as one broad civilization), and Asia (China, Japan, and the Islamic Empires).
Specific Instructions: Remember that you are putting forward an argument here, not just restating all of the course material. Your first paragraph should introduce your topic and have a clear thesis argument. After that you need to cover the four major civilizations (Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia) and their role in globalization and the impact it had on them. I would suggest covering one and then moving on to another, but keep in mind that you need to highlight links between the civilizations. Your essay should show cause and effect (as that’s what History is about). Also a conclusion paragraph that reminds the reader of your points and provides some insight into your argument (like why some civilizations succeeded while others were more static or declined) is necessary.
Part II (the shorter essay):
Please answer one of the two following questions in an essay you write on the paper provided.
Question 1: According to Cabeza de Vaca’s account in Adventures in the Unknown Interior of the Americas, how did cross-cultural understandings and misunderstandings shape the interaction between the Spanish Conquistadores and the Native Americans in his experiences?
Question 2: Based on the film, The Return of Martin Guerre, what was life like for most people in the pre-industrial and pre-enlightened world?
Part III (the shorter stuff):
Please answer the following questions on the sheet below. If you are unsure, please guess as if you point nothing down, you get zero points for that question. If you guess and are sort of close, you might not get full points, but you will get more than zero points.
