Economic Espionage Case
Introduction
Economic espionage refers to the illegal targeting and stealing of serious economic intelligence. Economic espionage cases involve the clandestine acquisition or stealing of less valuable proprietary data in various sectors such as finance, and technology. The selected FBI case comprises a Chinese local and his worker who demonstrate an actual threat of economic espionage.
Economic Espionage Case Involving Two Parties
The two parties involved in this case are a Chinese citizen by the name Ji Li Huang and his worker, Xiao Guang Qi. They both attempted to steal a proprietary formula of an American firm for cellular glass insulation (United States Government, 2015). The two parties were very bold in how aggressive they turned out to be and the sum of techniques they applied before acting illegally. The legal and regulatory sources for this report are sourced from the "official website of United State government." According to United States Government (2015), the two were sentenced for conspiracy, stealing trade secrets, and economic espionage.
At the hotel, both of them met with an American firm’s worker to purchase the trade secret detail for $200,000. Nevertheless, the two failed to recognize that both the firm and the worker were operating with the FBI. Therefore, the meeting happened as a sting action. Consequentially, Huang became sentenced to one year and six months in federal prison and authorized to compensate a fine worth $250,000. On the other hand, the deportation and finning of $30,000 were made as a way to punish for his unlawful act (United States Government, 2015).
Conclusion
In summary, the pair committed such unlawful actions just to benefit themselves and their home government. It is economic espionage as theft of trade secrete as they met at a hotel with a worker of an American firm to purchase the trade secret data. Finally, due to such economic espionage, American firms should work with the FBI when they get suspicious acts to protect national economic security and businesses. IPEC released a strategy on mitigating the theft of U.S. trade secrets. The strategy calls for focusing diplomatic efforts to protect trade secrets overseas, promoting voluntary best practices by private industry to protect trade secrets, enhancing domestic law enforcement operations, improving domestic legislation, and boosting public awareness and stakeholder outreach.
