Criteria for Parasitology Case Study

Students enrolled in MLAB 1231 are required to write a case study report on a parasite of their choice. This report is worth 10% of the final grade for this course. First, you MUST use Internet Explorer as your browser for this website! Firefox or other browsers do NOT work on this website!!

Go to: https://www.cdc.gov/dpdx/monthlycasestudies/2020/index.html and select a case study from any of those listed on this website. After reviewing the case study and the images presented, click on the “Click here” button to find the answer. The case study that is selected should be one that involves a parasite we have covered in this course. (Do not select one that has not been covered.)

After selecting a case study, write a minimum two page report on the parasite. Use this outline for the report:

  1. Present case study material as found on the website.

  2. Copy and paste at least one picture from the website into the report. (Right click on picture and click on “Copy Image”. Then go to your report, place the cursor in your document, and “Paste” in your report. The “Paste” function is found under the “Edit” tab in Word. Notify the instructor if you are having difficulty with performing this “Copy Image” procedure.)

  3. Provide the life cycle of the parasite. This material should be obtained from the CDC website or other source, such as the taped lectures, the textbook, or lecture guides.

  4. Discuss the morphology (appearance) of the parasite as found in the case report. This material should be obtained from the CDC website or other source, such as the taped lectures, the textbook, or lecture guides.

  5. Give the pathology of the parasite – how the parasite makes the patient sick. This material should be obtained from the CDC website or other source, such as the taped lectures, the textbook, or lecture guides.

  6. Briefly present the way that the parasite is found in the lab. Example: blood smear, examination of cerebral spinal fluid, stool specimen, etc. This material should be obtained from the CDC website or other source, such as the taped lectures, the textbook, or lecture guides.
