Writing Assignment #1

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

It is the student's responsibility to make certain the writing assignment meets all of the requirements (content, integrative scientific writing, formatting,  page limit, etc), is saved in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or in PDF,  is uploaded successfully, does not exceed the 10% Turn-It-In score threshold, and is accessible to the professor and TAs.  Multiple submissions are permitted, however the most recent submission will be graded.  Students should begin uploading the document one day (24 hours) but at least 30 minutes before the due date, to allow for successful upload and submission before the assignment folder closes.  Do not wait until 11:59pm to attempt to upload and submit: it will not work and the unsuccessful submission will result 0 points.  Failure to complete/upload/submit an assignment prior to the due date is not a system-technological error. A corrupted file or improperly formatted file will result in a “0”.  Make-ups and/or a “redo” are not permitted in this course and no late work will be accepted.

OVERVIEW:

Psychological and medical studies are commonly discussed in the media. Often, the general public hears about these studies through popular press articles. It is our responsibility to critically evaluate whether the conclusions being drawn by these popular press articles are consistent with the data from the original research. The goal of this paper is to practice critical thinking and summarizing research articles.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Read the peer-reviewed article (first!), paying close attention to the research design and findings.

2) Read the popular press article (second), paying close attention to how the findings of the peer-reviewed article are interpreted and described.

3) Review learned information from the text, lecture, and associated course materials regarding research methods and causality

4) Compose a well-written, scientific report. General formatting and guidelines are as follows:

GENERAL FORMATTING GUIDELINES:

  • 1.5 - 3 pages long (range is firm; not including the title and reference page)

  • Double-spaced

  • Size 12 Times New Roman font

  • 1” margins

  • Title Page (without name)

  • References page (NOT "works cited")

SCIENTIFIC WRITING REQUIREMENTS (see Integrative Writing for additional assistance):

  • APA formatting is required

    • Recommended text: American Psychological Association (2010).  Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.).  Washington, DC: APA.  ISBN-10: 1433805618

    • Free and recommended website: Purdue Owl https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html (Links to an external site.)

  • Refrain from using pronouns (including third-person).  Instead, restate the concept, construct, or term in each sentence.  A pronoun is appropriate to use, when the term is previously identified in the same sentence.

  • Do not use any quotes.  Instead, carefully and thoroughly paraphrase the authors’ ideas.

  • Be comprehensive but concise.

    • Make sure the main argument is clearly identified and that the paper includes concrete examples.

    • Make sure each paragraph makes a clear point

    • Make sure the ordering of points from paragraph to paragraph is logical and transition sentences are included to enhance flow of information

  • Proper spelling, grammar, style, and writing quality are very important. Your paper should demonstrate college-level writing.

      1. Summarize the peer-reviewed article (~0.5 page).

        • Identify the research hypothesis, the subject variables (including all independent and dependent variables), the design of the study (correlational or experimental), and the outcome.

        • Explain whether and how the outcome of the study supports the research hypothesis.

      2. Summarize the popular press article (~0.5 page)

        • Describe the content of the article, including any info about the research hypothesis, the subject variables (including all independent and dependent variables), the design of the study (correlational or experimental), and the outcome.

        • Describe other supporting information, such as quotes from the authors or others.

        • Note any statements, phrases, or conclusions that imply causality. Pay special attention to the title and some of the quotes in the paper for causal language. (HINT: the word is causal, not casual.)

      3. Evaluate whether the press article provided an accurate report of the original research (1 – 1.5 pages).

        • Did the author use any language that implied a causal relationship between the variables that were studied? Explain.

        • Describe why causal conclusions cannot be made from correlational studies. Use material from the textbook and lectures (Chapter 2) for this.

        • Suggest and explain a possible third variable (see Chapter 2 content) that might account for the finding that videogame playing is associated with creativity. Hint: this should *not* be anything about video game playing itself.
