Elligan, D., & Utsey, S. (1999). Utility of an African-Centered Support Group for African American Men Confronting Societal Racism and Oppression. Cultural Diversity &     Ethnic Minority Psychology, 5(2), 156-165.

The topic of the article is Utility of an African-centered support group for African American men confronting societal racism and oppression. The authors employed a review of literature as the method of study. The study found that there was no single article that had been published in any of the major psychological journals about the topic of study. The study intended to “…outline the use of an African-centered group approach to helping African American men develop effective coping skills to successfully ameliorate the impact of societal racism and oppression on their lives” (Elligan, & Utsey 1999, include the page number when quoting). There is no limitation of the study mentioned.

Esposito, L., & Romano, V. (2014). Benevolent Racism: Upholding Racial Inequality in the Name of Black Empowerment. Western Journal of Black Studies, 38(2), 69-83.

The topic of the article is: Benevolent Racism: Upholding Racial Inequality in the Name of Black Empowerment. The authors used a survey method to conduct the research. The study found out that there exists a history of racial benevolence in the United States. The study addresses how the racial benevolent manifestation is different from the initial renditions and thereby drawing from different sources to explore the current examples of benevolent racism. The study concludes by highlighting the reason why it is important for people to understand benevolent racism for purpose of anti-racist activism and contemporary research. The study did not mention any limitations.


Ford, N. G. (2003). Race, War, and Surveillance (Book). Journal of American Ethnic History, 22(3), 121.

The topic of the article is Race, War, and Surveillance . The study found out that there were no ‘ Neglo-subversion ” done by the Bureau of Investigation (BI), newspapers, Military Intelligence Bureau, black leaders and organizations. The author concludes that there were no tangible evidence in segregation, violence and discrimination against African Americans by the investigative agencies. There is no limitation of the study mentioned .

Gutierrez, L. M. (1990). Working with women of color: An empowerment perspective. Social work, 35(2), 149-153.

The topic of the article is: working with women of color: An empowerment perspective. The author used a case study method. The author found out that the effective way for working with women of color is through the concepts of empowerment and techniques that focus on issues pertaining to the power imbalance. The author concludes the study by identifying a set of specific principles that can be effective in empowering women of color. The author did not mention any limitations of the study .

Varner, F., & Mandara, J. (2013). Discrimination Concerns and Expectations as Explanations for Gendered Socialization in African American Families. Child Development, 84(3), 875-890.

The topic of the article is: discrimination concerns and expectations as explanations for gendered socialization in African American families. The authors employed context study method of research. From the study, it was found out that expectations of maternal were connected to the responsiveness of the mother, monitoring, parent-adolescent conflict, and rule enforcement. The relationship between parenting practices and gender was partly explained through the expectations and racial discrimination worries of the mother. The study concludes that the findings clearly show the benefit of contextual factors on African American family processes (Varner, & Mandara 2013). There is no study limitation mentioned in the article.
