Personality Reflection Paper

This is not easy. Take your time doing it and really think about your answers. I am not looking for quantity, but quality. If done well, you can really gain insight into your own personality (as well as get a good grade)!

Your reflection will have three parts:

1) Write a paragraph about your personality. Think about your quirks, oddities, and habits. How would your friends and family describe you?

2) Use TWO theories of personality theories listed below to explain how you developed your personality. There should be at least one paragraph for each theory. BE SPECIFIC AND USE AS MANY CONCEPTS (see below) FROM EACH THEORY AS POSSIBLE! Back up your application of the concepts with specific examples from your life/ personality/behavior/thought/feelings. Include the following concepts when applying the theories:

    • Psychoanalytic (Freud):

      • Id (devil)/Ego/Super Ego (angel)

      • Psychosexual stages and fixations, Oedipal/Electra complex, penis envy/castration anxiety

      • Defense mechanisms

    • Trait (Allport):

      • Common Traits, Individual Traits, Surface Traits, Source Traits

      • The “Big 5”

      • Meyers-Briggs

    • Humanistic (Rogers and Maslow):

      • Characteristics of self-actualizers and what you are doing to self-actualize

      • Self-Image, Ideal Self, Possible Self, and Congruency

      • How evaluation from others influenced your own self-worth and regard

    • Social-Learning (Rotter and Bandura):

      • Psychological Situation (how the person interprets the situation)

      • Expectancies and Self-efficacy

      • Reinforcement Value and Self-Reinforcement

    • Behavioral (Skinner):

      • Operant Conditioning (behaviors shaped through reinforcements and punishments)

      • Classical Conditioning (environmental stimuli causing automatic behavioral responses)

3) Reflect on what you have learned about yourself

Grading Rubric:

  • Part 1 – 10 points (personality is described thoughtfully and thoroughly)

  • Part 2 – 70 points (35 pts per theory – the concepts in each theory are explained and applied to your own personality using details, examples and thoughtful reflection)

  • Part 3 – 15 points (thoughtful reflection on the project used)

  • Writing quality (organization, spelling, grammar, punctuation…) – 5 points
