Term Paper (20% of grade) due 11:30 pm Monday, May 3 on BrightSpace.

Minimum 700 words. Term papers will not be accepted late due to final grade dates.

The term paper is a topic of your choice as follows:

  1. It must use concepts learned in this course. You choose major concepts (usually highlighted in lectures) from the course from at least three basic readings and apply them to a real life situation of social inequality you experienced or observed.

This means you need to think of a time you have experienced inequality in your own life or observed it in someone else’s. This could be something that happened to you or one of your parents or siblings or friends in the work place, at school, in the family, in an organization, in health care, in dealing with government, in the media, etc. Examples are someone in your family experiencing discrimination in a job. Or it might be something that happened to you in school, on a team, in a group you belong to. If you can’t find an example from your own experience or your social network, you can use something you observed from someone you don’t know. You need to be very careful here because if you take a story from the news, the paper has to be your application of concepts to that story and it’s very easy to make your paper about the news story instead of using what you have learned.

  1. You will choose an area of inequality from class, race/ethnicity, gender, or age (must be one of these 4) and

  1. apply basic concepts learned to that area. This seems self-explanatory. Once you have chosen an experience, you probably already know the type of inequality, then you look for major concepts to apply from at least 3 lectures under the weekly readings. You can also use material from any on-line links that were in assignments. YOU MAY NOT USE OUTSIDE MATERIAL AS A MAJOR RESOURCE OTHER THAN ONE NEWS SOURCE DESCRIBING IT IF YOU CHOOSE SOMETHING NOT YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OR OBSERVATION . USE THE LECTURES AND BOOKS FROM THIS CLASS.

  1. You must include at least one institution (government, work/business, media, economy, education, family, health care, religion, sport, leisure). This also seems obvious. The inequality is likely to happen in the context of an institution.

IMPORTANT: THIS PAPER IS ABOUT YOU SHOWING YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE CORE COURSE CONCEPTS IN THE LECTURES AND BOOKS USED. ANY OUTSIDE RESOURCES CANNOT BE A MAIN RESOURCE. THEY SHOULD BE USED VERY CAUTIOUSLY!!

DEFINITIONS FROM OTHER RESOURCES AND QUOTATIONS FROM ANYWHERE, INCLUDING LECTURE, OFTEN INDICATE STUDENTS’ INABILITY TO EXPLAIN OR APPLY CONCEPTS. THIS LIKELY SHOWS LACK OF UNDERSTANDING. DEFINITIONS FROM ONLINE OR QUOTATIONS >8-10 WORDS RESULT IN SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE GRADE. JUST SAYING….SHOW YOUR UNDERSTANDING! IF YOU NEED HELP WITH THAT, CONTACT YOUR INSTRUCTOR WHILE YOU ARE PLANNING YOUR PAPER.

Term Paper Topic due Wednesday, March 3 in BrightSpace drop box.
