I am leading the Kent YMCA until the managers comes back , I usually all around the South King county . I started to work for the YMCA back in the summer of 1985, I started as supervisor , I have been a supervisor for 30 years until I have become executive

What do you value the most about how employees apply their role in the organization ?

The staff members are the ones that bring work mission and value to workforce and help the organization accomplish goals . Staff members work with seniors and youth in the community to find their happiness here . We are most successful when staff members are do their part in the organization .

Describe the last time your felt truly inspired by one of the YMCA staff members?

There are a lot of times that I was inspired by the staff members , for example the regional CEO Lauren Yaden has listen to the staff members feedback about the PTO and she decided that PTO wasn’t fair for everyone , so she implemented new pay time PTO benefits for the part timers just like the full timers . She said we all get better together and treat all staff members the same . I was truly inspired by her bold action.

We had branch executive here , her name is Kelly , she has great leadership skills and connects with the community members who are members at the Y, and has really good energy towards the staff members as well

I try to communicate better and listen even better , By doing this its helps the operation future goals and I expect the staff to do their part .

Communication is a big one , communicating with others is helpful , being able to communicate to the Y members with healthy learning , new classes being added and also communicate with valid members .

What process do you follow when making an important decision ?

I try to get information as much I can so I can better my understanding of every situation and ask people inform if they have ideas and concern , this way every decision can be carefully examined very well

Share an experience when your advice was not received and how did you hand the situation

My branch manager build the new building , I wear different hats , so when covid hit , one of the brench executive had a plan , the executive did different way then I told her to. I was fruasted but then I had to check myself but then when I talked to her , things got heated and we finally found a solution , now I know to overreacted when those situations come up .

I recommend front desk to put in a timer on the phone and check the locker rooms because there has been a lot thefts lately here , some people
Didn’t really follow along was doing the hourly locker room checks so then I got little heated but I stayed professional started my self so others can follow , which they did.

How often do you get feedback from staff members ?

I try to talk to the members monthly , if not weekly . I like to check to see how everyone is doing and ask them if they have any concerns they like to me .

We get feedback from our supervisor once a month and get feedback from the staff members daily , like the end of every shift , to ask each how the day went for them .
What causes conflict , and how is conflict resolved ?

Misunderstanding is a big one when it comes to conflicts and how its resolved is a better communication so people can have sense of ownership for their faults . We all answer to someone else so its better understanding about every situation

A miscommunication cause a lot of the conficts , for example some of the staff ideas weren’t take serious just like make reservation for open spot that we need fill up , we decide we need work together and we handle fix the issue there.
How are employees recognized for the efforts ?

We survey our staff members to look for their inputs . I value what they value so we can all be in the same page , And also it depends what they achievement that we need to reward them for . Its important that we know our staff members well to understand their needs.

We recognize all employees , we go on , one on one talk with our supervisor and get feedback . Also some YMCA bring rewards like food and gifts to show appreciation for the great work staff members do for them .
What makes you proud about working for this organization ?

When we make big difference , for example the Bellevue executive hosting a vaccine place for the community members , and since now teens can get vaccinated , the executive try connect with every one and works the community members very well .This makes me happy because it makes me proud that we are closely working with community members closely in time of need.

A chance to connect with the community members , I lived here for years and I have never connect with community just like how connect with them since I started working for the YMCA . I always talk to them and listen to them .
