The local school board is meeting in a few days to vote on the inclusion of a comprehensive sexuality education curriculum for all grades.  The curriculum will be called,   ALL ABOUT ME (for elementary students), CHANGING BODIES (for middle school students) AND TAKING CARE OF OUR BODIES AND MINDS (for high school students).  The opinion is based on the ACOG opinion paper and the research that supported it (see below) .  Some community members are opposed to having this curriculum in the schools, while others are in support of a comprehensive sexuality education curriculum. You are the school board president, and your area has seen a rise in pre-teen and teen pregnancy.  Your school system has also been sued for permitting sexual harassment of female, homosexual, and nonbinary students at all grade levels.  Pressures have been building from many sides, and after a Title IX review, the team conducting the review recommended instituting a comprehensive sex education program that started in preschool as recommended by ACOG.  After much consideration, the school superintendent and the school board have agreed that this is the best solution. Regardless of your personal views, write an argument that responds to parental opposition to this decision.   Be sure to support your argument with information from our readings or other appropriate research-based information.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Committee on Adolescent Health,  has published an opinion paper on Comprehensive Sexuality Education. Select here to read the opinion.

HINTS:

1) PAY ATTENTION TO  the difference between the terminologies of "sex" and "sexuality" education" WHEN WRITING YOUR POST.

2) USE SOURCES THROUGHOUT YOUR ARGUMENT (DO NOT RELY ON PERSONAL OPINIONS)

3) USE A CONVERSATIONAL TONE, MAKING SURE TO AVOID OVERLY TECHNICAL LANGUAGE

Please review the Discussion Guidelines outlined in the Course Overview.

Important note: Posts are accepted only in the week in which they are due.  Early or late posts to the discussion are not accepted for grading.  While you may prepare a post ahead of time, you may only submit it during the actual week of the discussion.

Guidelines for Discussions

The discussions are an integral place for interactions between the instructor and students and students among their peers.  The discussions are academic discussions and therefore cannot be based solely on opinion.  The goal of the discussion is to have discourse, learn new information and gain an understanding of varying points of view.

If you are presenting a point of view, support your point of view with information from our readings or outside research.  Simply stating your opinion is not sufficient.  Please follow the guidelines below and the grading rubric  to ensure that you are able to earn maximum credit.

Note: Posts are accepted only in the week in which they are due.  Once the week ends, the discussion ends.  For example, Week 2 posts are only accepted during Week 2.

Initial posts:

  • Initial posts must be made by 11:59 PM on Wednesday (Week 1 is the exception-initial posts may be made through Sunday).

  • Initial posts must be substantive and provide a detailed response to the question posed.

  • Support your writing with information from our readings or other outside sources (don’t forget to tell the source of your information).

  • Initial post should demonstrate a depth of understanding of the material being discussed

  • Opinion only is not acceptable.

  • Writing must be high quality and free from spelling and grammar errors.

  • Respond to any questions posed by your instructor or peers.

Reply posts:

  • Reply to 2 of your classmates by 11:59 PM Sunday.

  • Replies must be substantive and make an effort to move the discussion forward by asking a question, clarifying, adding a new point of view, making a relationship between areas of the discussion, or providing a new resource

  • Simply agreeing or disagreeing or saying good job or a post is great is not sufficient.

  • Replies must be written in detail.  A few sentences is not a sufficient reply.

  • Writing must be high quality and free from spelling and grammar errors.
