Poster Assignment

Purpose: Posters are an effective way of communicating concisely, visually and attractively, and can be a powerful way of getting information across. Academic posters summarize information or research concisely and attractively, to help publicize it and generate discussion.

Posters are widely used in the academic community, and most conferences include poster presentations in their program. Academic posters can reach a wide audience as they may be displayed for several hours or days, at national or international conferences. They may also be published online as part of conference proceedings, becoming part of a permanent record of research activity.

An effective poster can make a strong impact, so it's worth developing your poster planning skills.

How to Proceed: Individually, research one of the ‘Sectoral Regulatory Regimes’ you have read about in the Chapter -6 “Sectoral Regulatory Regimes”. Some of the sectors that are mentioned in the chapter are Fossil Fuels, Nuclear Energy, Mining and Aggregates, Fisheries, Forestry, Agriculture and Aquaculture, Pesticides and Biotechnology. You could choose from this list or also look at a sector outside these. If you choose a sector outside this list, please make sure you check the sector with me before proceeding.

Research the regulatory regimes by searching online and you will find many sources. Try to search and learn about the following:

  • The significance of the sector you have chosen

  • The different regulatory statutes and law applicable to the sector

  • The relevance and relation of the different statues to international laws and/or provincial regulations.

Prepare an academic poster

  1. Highlight the most important and interesting information you learned. You will not be able to include everything you learn on the poster.

  2. You can make a hard copy of the poster using a poster display board of some kind (like a science fair poster) and upload photos of this, or you can make a digital academic poster. See: How to make a digital academic poster in PowerPoint; available here.

  3. In the event you are doing a hard copy of the poster please ensure you upload clear pictures of the poster. Grades will be deducted if the pictures uploaded are not clear.

  4. In either case, please ensure that the final product is uploaded as a PDF file.

  5. Upload the poster to the Assignment tab under Assessments on UM Learn entitled “Posters” by Oct 1st 2021 10:00 pm.

  6. References can be attached as a separate file if you are unable to fit it into the poster.

  7. Typically a poster would have about 300 to 500 words .

  8. There is no specific dimensions as this is all on digital format. An A0 size for portrait or if it is landscape about 36'' X 48'' (height x width) should be fine. Please ensure that the content is in a single page.

Academic poster tips:

  • Allow plenty of time to prepare and produce your poster.

  • Plan carefully, structure content clearly and present it suitably.

  • Aim for a good balance of text and graphics.

  • Remember, it’s the content that counts!

Content – organization of ideas, logic, appropriate depth of information
