  2. Salat - prayer (5 daily prayer at specific times)

  3. Zakat - alms (giving to the poor each year 2 ½%)

  4. Sawm - fasting (not eating from dawn till sunset)

  5. Hajj - Pilgrimage to mecca (once in their life time)

The Islamic Calendar:

  • Also known as the hijri calendar

    • Prophet Muhammad’s journey from Mecca to Medina

    • Starts later

  • Lunar Calendar (Months are based on moon changes)

    • Result: Dates move up about 11 days each year

Two Major Muslim Holidays:

  • Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan, first day of shawwal)

    • Festival of breaking fast

    • Marks the end of Ramadan
