Organization Analysis Guidelines

Objective

In this oral presentation, you'll analyze the management practices of an organization. Choose one element of management (e.g., organizational culture, social responsibility, strategic management, organizational structure, innovation management, motivation, etc.) and analyze, using the frameworks and theories discussed in the course, how the organization’s practices drive superior (or inferior) performance. Finally, prepare a recommendation for the organization’s leaders based on your research.

You may choose to analyze any organization, but conduct some initial research to make sure enough information is available to develop a thorough presentation. When selecting a company, you may find it helpful to consult FORTUNE’s World’s Most Admired Companies (Links to an external site.).

You may complete this project individually or with a partner.

Research Methods

Your presentation should reference at least three (3) information sources, not including the textbook and other course materials. A variety of resources are available to gather information about the organization: business publications such as the Wall Street Journal, academic journals, company annual reports, etc. You may even choose to interview employees (preferably managers) of the organization.

Incorporate both the library databases and online (e.g., Google) searches in your research since they utilize different sources of information:

  • Library databases

    • To access the library databases, click the "Library Resources" link in the course navigation menu (left side of your screen). The Wall Street Journal database, in particular, is a valuable source of information for your analysis!

    • Watch the video, General Business Research (Links to an external site.), for brief overview of how to search the library databases effectively.

    • If you need any assistance with library resources, please contact Rachel Zyirek (you'll see her contact information once you click on the "Library Resources" link).

  • Online searches

    • You may also conduct research online, but evaluate the credibility of your sources before referencing them in your report. Also, if you find a good article that's behind a paywall, check to see if it's available in the library databases.

Format

You'll record your presentation using Canvas Studio, so you'll need access to a computer and webcam. Your presentation should be 6–8 minutes in length, be accompanied by visual aids (e.g., PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.), and include the following components:

  • Introduction

    • Preview your main ideas.

  • Body

    • Analyze the organization’s management practices (see Objective above), providing evidence based on your research.

  • Recommendation

    • Present at least one (1) recommendation for the organization’s leaders related to the management topic you researched. Your recommendation should not be to continue “business as usual”—it must be a novel idea.

  • Closing

    • Summarize your main ideas.

  • References

    • Cite a minimum of three (3) sources using APA style.

Deliverables

The following deliverables, due in subsequent weeks, will help guide you toward the successful completion of your presentation by the end of the semester:

  • Proposal

  • Annotated bibliography

  • Outline (draft of presentation slides)
