Bacteria Mystery?

Jhanique Jones

Purpose:

The purpose is to identify an unknown bacterium while doing multiple tests.

Introduction:

Should be a minimum of 2 pages explaining why one would want to identify an unknown bacterium. What tests should be done and why? Use the lab manual, outside sources, and the handouts you’ve been provided for this information. Also if you are taking the lecture as well the textbook has very good information as well. NO PERSONAL PRONOUNS (I, we, us, they, my, etc). In text citations identifying where you obtained information should be used (author, year). NO QUOTES. Write in your own words.

Results: Enterobacter Aerogenes Is the bacteria that was unknown

Urea

Urea tube is yellow

Bacteria doesn’t produce urease

PR broth is yellow

Formation of acid and gas is produced

PRFerm lactose

PR broth is yellow

Formation of acid and gas is produced

PRFerm sucrose

PR broth is yellow

Formation of acid and gas is produced

Methyl Red (MR)

MR tube is yellow

MR wasn’t produced

Voges Proskauer (VP)

VP tube is red

Acetoin produce VP

Catalase

Bubbles was formed

Catalase was produced

Oxidase

yellow

Bacteria isn’t produced in oxidase

Citrate

Blue Growth

Bacteria produces citrate

PAD

PAD tube is yellow

No red ring appeared; so, bacteria isn’t produced in PAD

Sulfur

H2S tube is yellow

Black wasn’t formed; so, bacteria doesn’t produce sulfur

Indole

Indole tube is yellow

No Bacteria is produced in indole

Motility

Red “Fuzzy”

Motile bacteria are produced

Do not record interpretation as +/-. For example: If you observe that the urea tube is pink, then the interpretation is that the bacteria produce urease.

Discussion:

Should be a MINIMUM of 2 pages long. Discuss your results and state how you identified your unknown. Hint: Use the flow chart as a guide. Then state: The unknown is:?????

The rest of your discussion should focus on the organism. Does it cause disease, treatments, where is it normally found, etc. In text citations identifying where you obtained information should be used (author, year).
