The two stories of choice are THE RAVEN by Edgar Allen Poe and Thou Art The Man by Edgar Allen Poe. Only 2 sources are needed. Preferably from a school library data base.

Paragraph 1:

  • Debater’s paragraph

  • Summarize a library secondary source talking about the film.

  • ½ a page

  • MLA formatting (times new roman, 12 point font and double space).

  • No quote. At least no more than 3-4 words.

  • Summarize from the point of view of the writer. Example: “Erika Johnson in her essay (name essay) argues that Psycho is…”

Paragraph 2:

  • Debater’s paragraph

  • ½ page

  • Summary of another secondary source talking about the film (see requirements in paragraph 1)

Paragraph 3:

  • Is the issue and thesis paragraph

  • ½ a page

  • For example: “The issue with Johnson’s argument is…”

  • Do the same with your 2nd debater

  • At the end of the paragraph, state a clear and concise thesis. Example of a thesis:

      • "Zuckerberg is an opportunist"

Paragraph 4:

  • Topic sentence (A topic sentence reminds the reader of the thesis topic and contains a sub-topic that you will prove in the rest of the paragraph.

  • Example of a topic sentence 'sub-topic' is:

    • Zuckerberg is an opportunist in his actions

  • Scrutinize the film to find at least 3 examples of how Zuckerberg actions illustrate that he is an opportunist.

  • The structure of paragraphs 4,5,6 goes like this:

    • Topic sentence

    • Introduce quote by telling the reader what the quote says in your own words.

    • Present quote (Fencher) and/or (Film Art, 26).

    • Comment upon the quote with a list of examples (Zuckerberg is greedy, a dissembler, and an opportunist) 1st from your primary (chosen film & book ‘Film Art’) and in revision from your other secondary sources. These list of examples have to do with proving your topic sentence sub-topic, “actions”.

  • This essay requires 6-8 secondary sources. 2 of which are your debaters. So, this means that you need 4-6 more secondary sources that you will incorporate either to support or counter-argue your topic sentences’ discussions in paragraphs 4,5,6.

  • Example of a counter-argument: “Erika Johnson in her essay (title) argues that (state what she argues); however, what she fails to take into consideration is…”.

  • The 4,5,6 paragraphs must be at least ½ a page, cannot be shorter, but can be longer.

Paragraph 5

    • In paragraph 5 illustrate how Zuckerberg is an opportunist in his decisions

    • Follow the essay structure of proving your thesis in paragraph 4.

Paragraph 6:

    • In paragraph 6 illustrate how Zuckerberg is an opportunist in principles

    • Follow the essay structure of proving your thesis in paragraph 4
