Journal Reflection #2

Due Week 13 (This reflection is worth 12.5% of your final grade)

People must take a modicum of public responsibility for each other even if they have no ties to each other.” - Jane Jacobs

Reflective Questions:

Throughout the term we have discussed the fact we as individuals have the power to be agents of social change. Explain how you have been or intend to be an agent of social change in your life. What are you doing/intend to do (or what have you done) to be an agent of social change?

Guidelines to follow:

  • One page typed, double spaced in 12 point font, with standard margins.

  • Before you begin, self-reflect on your life so far, and on what you see for yourself in the future (do not include this reflection in the journal. This step is for brainstorming purposes only and is designed to help you with successfully completing the assignment)

  • Be sure to answer the questions posed in the Reflective Questions by following the steps below. Also, you must include the correct application of 3 concepts from the chapter on Social Change. Terms that are highlighted in ‘bold’ (HINT HINT). Please see rubric on the last page of this document as a guide to your marks:

    • First paragraph - state your personal views on what it means to be an agent of social change. In this paragraph, please answer all of the following questions: What do you think about this notion – what does it mean to you? Why is it important? Should everyone be responsible for becoming involved or should it be limited to those in influential positions (such as police officers, political figures, celebrities…)?

    • Second paragraph - provide one example to explain how you have been or intend to be an agent of social change. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING THE EXAMPLE, EXPLAIN WHY YOUR ACTIONS WOULD BE CONSIDERED AN EXAMPLE OF SOCIAL CHANGE. Remember, an example of social change would NOT be something like “being a good role model for my younger sibling”… that is a natural expected function of ‘family’ and your role. I’m talking about SOCIAL CHANGE in terms of something YOU can do to impact society in a positive way.

    • Third paragraph - provide a second example of how you have been or intend to be an agent of social change. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING THE EXAMPLE, EXPLAIN WHY YOUR ACTIONS ARE AN EXAMPLE OF SOCIAL CHANGE.

    • NOTE: make sure the ideas you present in paragraphs 2 &3 are distinct from each other.

  • Proof-read your work, as marks will be deducted for spelling and grammar errors

  • Reference any sources that you use for information including your textbook

  • Ensure you include your full name and student number on a cover page!

Journal 2 - Marking Scheme

/2 marks for spelling and grammar

/4 marks for providing an insightful reflection on how you are/have been/will be an agent of social change, AND FOR EXPLAINING WHY YOUR ACTIONS ARE EXAMPLES OF SOCIAL CHANGE (2 distinct considerations are given AND EXPLAINED)
