BIOL181 Course Project Guide

This document serves as a brief summary of the course research project, a multi-step assessment that is designed to demonstrate the learning objectives of this course. Please note that for each stage of the project you will be given complete directions, examples and grading criteria/rubrics. All of the Assignments listed below are currently accessible for review in the Assignments section of the classroom. Discussions will be accessible the week they are assigned.

Project Steps

Please note that the descriptions below are meant to be an overview that will help you understand the various steps in this term-wide assignment. Complete directions will be given to you each week in the discussions or assignments when the step is due.

You will begin this assignment (the Course Project) by thinking about a specific disease or medical condition that interests you.

This project is comprised of three discussions, weeks 1,2 and 8, and three assignments, Assignments 1, 2, and 3. (Note that the Academic Honor Quiz is not an “official” part of this project but does cover information pertinent to the overall project).

Week 1: Academic Honor Quiz (under Course Tools > Quizzes)

This assessment was designed to help review citation, APA formatting, and library research and to avoid issues of plagiarism.

Week 1 Discussion - Disease/Condition Choice (under Discussions)

In week one, you will choose the specific disease or medical condition that interests you and create a very short presentation (two to three concise slides) introducing your topic that you will continue to research over the next seven weeks of the course.

Week 2 Discussion – Evaluating Resources

In week two, you will select a source of anatomy and physiology information from the open web. The source can relate to your research topic or any anatomy and physiology topic. Evaluate the source and explain why it is or is not a credible source of information. Also, you will provide a reference in APA format. Of course, if you decide that it isn’t a credible site, you will not want to use it for your final presentation.

Week 3: Assignment #1 – Annotated Bibliography (under Course Tools > Assignments)

To help prepare you for the Presentation, due Week 7, you will submit an annotated bibliography covering three of the reference sources you will be using for your presentation.

Week 5: Assignment #2 – The Outline (under Course Tools > Assignments)

For this assignment, you will submit an alphanumeric outline of your presentation. This will help you structure your presentation and ensure that all the expected and required elements are included.

Week 7: Assignment #3 – The Presentation (under Course Tools > Assignments)

Using the steps completed to date, develop your presentation based on the work you submitted for Assignments 1 and 2 as well as the feedback you were given.

Week 8: Discussion 8- Share your Presentation and discuss your topic with the class

For this discussion, you will share your presentation with your classmates and discuss your experience.
