I have 2 simple Biology lab files needed done for this week. I have attached the files.

Ecological Footprint

Name________________________________________________________

Some pre-lab questions for you to answer.

1.What is the goal of this lab?

2.What is an ecological footprint?

3.What is the formula used in the lab to calculate your ecological footprint in hectares for one day?

Go to this website to find the answers to following questions:

http://www.sustainablescale.org/conceptualframework/understandingscale/measuringscale/ecologicalfootprint.aspx

4.Go to the Footprint of Nations section. What is an ecological deficit? What countries are in an ecological deficit?

5.Go to Limitations. What are two of the limitations of the ecological footprint?

Ecological Footprint Lab Activity

What is an ecological footprint?

The impact of a person or community on the environment, expressed as the amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources.

Your goal during this lab is to determine how much land is required to sustain your daily life based on your activities.

Part 1. How big is your footprint in a day?

A. Transportation

How did you travel yesterday?

- I walked - 0 points

- I cycled - 5 points

- I took public transit - 10 points

- I carpooled - 15 points

- I used a private vehicle - 30 points

(Multiply each score by the number of times you used that method of travel to move from one location to another in one day and add together)

Example:

I drove to school and then drove home = 30 x 2

I carpooled to the gym and home with my sister = 15 x 2

I biked to the grocery store and home = 5 x 2

Total for example = 60 + 30 + 10 = 100 Total Score for Transportation

Score for A- Transportation

-Day 1 total score 1._____

B. Water Use

How much water did you use? (circle answers for bathing, brushing teeth, and flushing the toilet)

Bathing

- I did not shower - 0 points

- 1-2min. shower - 5 points

- 3-6min. shower - 10 points

- 10min. shower – 20 points

- I bathed in a full tub - 20 points

- I bathed in a half-full tub – 10 points

- I reused someone else's bath water - 10 points

Brushing Teeth

- I left the water running when I brushed my teeth - 5 points

- I did not leave the water running when I brushed my teeth – 0 points

Flushing the Toilet

-I flushed the toilet between 0 and 3 times – 5 points

-I flushed the toilet more than 3 times – 10 points

Score for B –Water Use

-Day 1 total score 1._____

C. Clothing

-I am wearing the same clothes today that I wore yesterday

most- 0 points

some from yesterday – 5 points

none from yesterday – 10 points

-I always get brand new clothes

Rarely – 5 points

Sometimes – 10 points

Always – 20 points

Score for C - Clothing

Day 1 total score 1._____

D. Recreation

List below the games, sports and activities you participated in during your spare time yesterday.

How much equipment did you need to participate?

- none or little - 0 points

- some - 10 points

- quite a bit - 20 points

How much land was converted to playing fields, ice rinks, swimming pools, gym space, ski runs, etc. to meet your recreation needs?

- none or little - 0 points

- some (<1 hectare) - 10 points

- quite a bit (> 1 hectares) - 20 points

I spent the following amount yesterday on purchases (food, clothing, magazines, sports equipment, etc.)

- nothing spent - 0 points

- $5 – 5 points

- $10 - 10 points

- more than $10 - 1 point per dollar (so if you spent $27, that is 27 points)

Score for D - Recreation

Day 1 total score 1._____

E. Food

I ate the following portions of meat:

- none.......................0 points

- one portion ...............10 points

- two portions .............20 points

- three portions............30 points

This much food was left on my plate:

-none ....................0 points

- very little ............5 points

- more than a little.......10 points

I composted all vegetable and fruit scraps

- yes ......................0 points

- no .......................10 points

The food I ate is locally grown:

- all .......................0 points

- some ......................10 points

- none.......................20 points

The food I ate was packaged in paper or plastic:

- none packaged in paper or plastic ........................0 points

- some packaged in paper or plastic.......................10 points

- all packaged in paper or plastic ........................20 points

Score for E - Food

Day 1 total score 1._____

F. Garbage

If I were to take everything I threw into the garbage yesterday and put it all into the same container, I would need this size of container to hold it all:

- a large box (1 foot x 2 foot) .................30 points

- a shoebox ..........…....20 points

- a coffee cup ....................5 points

- I produced no garbage..…....0 points

Score for F - Garbage

Day 1 total score 1._____

G. Living Space

Calculate in square meters the indoor space that you required to live for the day. Include all the space in your "home", "school", etc. (1 sq. meter = 10 sq. feet).

Divide the total square meters by the number of people you shared this space with.

Home sq.m./# people = _____________

Add these numbers together to get your total square meters

School sq.m./# people = ____________

Other sq. m./# people = ____________

Total Square meters = ____________

Daily Score total

All day 1 total scores 1.(A+B+C+D+E+F)______

Add these numbers together to get your grand total

Total square meters ________________________

GRAND TOTAL = ________

Convert your grand total from above into your personal "footprint" for yesterday by using the conversion formula below:

Grand total/100 = Your environmental footprint in hectares (Note: 1 Hectare = 10 000m2)

My ONE DAY ecological footprint is ________________ hectares.

Multiply this by 365 to determine your yearly ecological footprint.

Yearly Ecological Footprint____________________________ hectares

Part 2- How many planets does it take to support your lifestyle?
