BizCafe Strategic Plan

Preparation

Review the following:

Your Assignment

Succeeding in BizCafe requires that you develop a clear, sound strategy and implementation plan for your cafe.

1. Establish Your Goals

List at least two goals for your café. For instance, is your goal to achieve 5-star ambiance? Perhaps you want to earn the highest net income of any cafe in town. Or maybe you want to aim for the highest customer satisfaction. Keep in mind that well-written goals are

  • Concisely written; each goal should be expressed in a single sentence

  • Expressed in terms of outcomes (what do you want to achieve?) rather than actions

  • Specific, not vague

  • Measurable and quantifiable (hint: see question 4 below)

  • Clear as to a time frame (hint: the simulation consists of 10 weeks)

  • Challenging yet attainable

For example, "To be the no. 1 cafe in town" is neither specific (no. 1 in what?) nor clear as to the time frame (by when?). A more well-written version is, "To be the leading cafe in revenue by week 10." In addition to being specific and clear as to timeframe, the outcome (no. 1 in revenue) can easily be measured.

Please use a bulleted list in your response.

2. Develop a Strategy

First, identify which generic strategy you'll use to achieve your goals. Next, describe your overall strategy. In other words, how will you create superior value for your customers?

You may borrow from Exercise 2.3 or develop a different strategy. In either case, feel free to be creative and think beyond the constraints of the BizCafe simulation. For example, perhaps your strategy incorporates nightly live music. Although, BizCafe doesn't allow for this option, go ahead and include it!

3. Implement Your Strategy

What decisions will you make in BizCafe to implement your strategy? Explain your general guidelines for each of the following decisions and how they support your strategy:

  • Number of servers

  • Wages

  • Coffee quality

  • Coffee price

  • Hours open

  • Advertising and promotion

For example, will you pay wages that are high, average, or low; will you serve coffee that is organic, high, or good quality; etc.? Be careful that your decisions do not work against each other or your goals; for example, you'll have trouble serving organic coffee at lower-than-average prices).

Please use a bulleted list in your response.

4. Evaluating Your Results

How will you know if your strategy is working? In other words, how will you know if you are on track to achieve your goals? Be specific—for each goal in question 1, identify which metric or report you will monitor in BizCafe. For example, "I will monitor my revenue ranking on the Dashboard."

Please use a bulleted list in your response.
