Research Prospectus Assessment

What is a prospectus?

A prospectus is a description and justification of research to be undertaken. A good prospectus is clear and concise.

The prospectus should demonstrate the student’s control of the issues to be investigated, make clear the boundaries of the inquiry, indicate the method(s) to be employed, and describe the significance of the research.

A detailed reference must be included in order to display the thoroughness of the preliminary investigation of the problem, the location of the problem in a field of inquiry, and the present state of the research in the field.

This prospectus should be 5-7 double-spaced typewritten pages, excluding references and appropriate appendices.

The prospectus should include the following sections:

1. Statement of the Problem

The problem is a concise statement of the problem. It should indicate the need for the study, describe the issue or problem to be studied, and situate it in a broader context.

The problem statement should be well articulated and supported by evidence of the problem.

2. Significance of the Study

This section states the various stakeholders who will benefit from the research that you will do.

3. Selected Theory (ies)

This is a summary literature review framework that surveys existing research on the topic, identifies at least five (5) of the main theory (ies), variables and concepts to be used, and demonstrates the significance of the proposed study within the existing body of literature. You could pull from theories, concepts or variables mentioned in your literature matrix.

4. Methodology

The methodology section explains the method(s) to be used and makes a case for the appropriateness of using the method(s) to carry out the proposed research. The methodology should demonstrate awareness of some of the anticipated difficulties that will face the proposed project and describe the ways the project will overcome anticipated challenges.

5. Working Reference

The reference is a crucial part of a successful prospectus. It indicates how thoroughly the student has investigated the research on the topic, its location within a field of inquiry, and its relation to cognate fields in and beyond the academic study of business. A good working bibliography at this stage of research is typically at 3-5 pages long. The references should contain ten (10) articles/sources, be alphabetically organized, written in APA format and all sources must be listed.

6. Appendices

Any questionnaires, interview guides or other such instruments/ data collection method to be used in the proposed investigation should be included as appendices.

A brief statement of the estimated timeline for completing the various stages of the research, completing the writing, and who will complete each section should also be included.
