Crafting Unified, Coherent Paragraphs

In this exercise, you'll collaborate with 2–3 other group members to submit a group response to the following assignment. To participate in group exercises, you must access your group's Collaboration. Group leaders will be notified at the beginning of the week via your Canvas Inbox.

Your Assignment

Complete Activity 4-58 on p. 109 of the textbook. Rewrite the message in 4–6 sentences, and keep the following points in mind:

  • The topic and purpose must be clear.

  • All the information must be related to the topic and purpose.

  • The ideas must be grouped and presented logically. Hint: For a persuasive request, use the indirect approach.

  • All necessary information must be included.

While you are encouraged to point out errors in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, etc., these are not considered substantive in nature. Optionally, one of your two comments may be a reply to another group member's suggestion in which you explain whether you agree or disagree with their suggestion and why. Where there are areas of disagreement, do your best to reach a consensus. Remember, your goal is to collaborate on creating a single group response to the assignment.

  2. By Wednesday at 11:59 PM. The group leader should revise their original draft based on the group's suggestions and discussion. If there are areas of disagreement, group leaders should exercise their best judgment. Please place your revision below the original, leaving the first draft and group member comments intact (i.e., do not mark comments as "resolved"). If you copy and paste your original draft to begin the revision, please click “Paste without formatting” so group members' comments aren’t duplicated. The group will receive a grade based on this final draft.

To successfully complete this assignment,

  • Observe the due dates specified above. Late responders will receive point deductions as outlined in the grading rubric below. 

  • Group leader: Submit a first and final draft.

  • Group members: Provide two specific and substantive suggestions for revision. Optionally, one of these may be a reply to another group member.

  • Use 12-point font, double-spacing, and one-inch margins.
