Preparation

Review the following:

  • Incorporating Graphics in Reports

Your Assignment

Well-designed visuals (e.g., tables, charts, maps, etc.) can enhance the communication power of text by clarifying data, creating visual interest, and making numerical data meaningful. In this discussion, you'll explore how to effectively incorporate visuals in written messages by responding to the following prompts:

  1. Find an online article, blog post, etc. containing a visual that communicates data (e.g., Inflation in America: Track where prices are risingLinks to an external site.), and post the URL in your discussion reply. If the link includes more than one visual, identify one of them. A photograph is acceptable as long as (1) it's displayed in the context of a business article or report and (2) it conveys data (e.g., an aerial photo displaying possible site locations). Decorative photos are not acceptable.

  2. Evaluate the effectiveness of the visual by considering the following questions:

    • Is it the right visual for the job (see Table 11.2 in the textbook)?

    • Does it adhere to the six principles of visual design (see pp. 288–289 in the textbook)? Hint: Focus on those that are most relevant.

    • Does the author follow best practices for incorporating graphics in written messages (see link above)? Hint: Focus on those that are most relevant.

    • What is your overall impression of the effectiveness of the graphic?
