Short Analytical Report

You may complete this assignment individually or with a partner. If you wish to complete the assignment in a team, please send me your partner's name and wait to hear back from me before submitting your report (I need to change some settings in Canvas).

The purpose of analytical reports is to analyze, to understand, or to explain—to think through a problem or an opportunity and explain how it affects an organization and how the organization should respond. In many cases, you’ll also be expected to make a recommendation based on your analysis.

Objective

Write a brief report outlining a set of recommendations for an organization (i.e., business, school, etc.). Your report may address any problem (perhaps one you're currently experiencing) that interests you; here are just a few examples

  1. Given the current labor shortage, how can we attract employees to our business?

  2. Our costs are increasing due to inflation. How can we raise prices without losing customers?

  3. What are the most effective methods for managing a hybrid workforce?

  4. What are the best practices for leading an effective and efficient virtual meeting?

Because the report is short, focus on those recommendations you feel are most important.

Research Methods

Your report should reference at least three (3) information sources that support your recommendations. Incorporate any of the following sources in your research:

  • Library databases: Click the "Library Resources" link in the course navigation menu to access the resources of the Massasoit Library.

  • Online searches: You may also conduct research online (e.g., Google), but use this checklist to evaluate the credibility of your sources before referencing them in your report. If you find a good article that's behind a paywall, check to see if it's available in the library databases.

  • Interviews: You may choose to interview someone with expertise related to the topic of your report.

Organization and Format

Using the direct approach, present your recommendations using the following steps (adapted from p. 264 of the textbook):

  1. Establish the need for action by briefly describing the problem or opportunity in the introduction. Assume you're preparing the report for a specific organization, and make up any details you need to establish the context (organization, audience, etc.).

  2. Announce the recommendations concisely and with action verbs.

  3. Briefly introduce the benefits that can be achieved if the recommendations are adopted, along with any potential risks.

  4. List the recommendations required to achieve the benefit, using action verbs for emphasis. The actions you want your readers to take become the main subdivisions of your report.

  5. Explain each recommendation more fully, giving details on procedures and benefits; if necessary, also explain how risks can be minimized.

  6. Briefly summarize your recommendations.

Organize your report using the following (or similar) structure:

  • Introduction: Steps 1 and 2

  • Benefits and Risks: Step 3

  • Recommendations: Steps 4 and 5. Under the main heading, include subheadings for each recommendation. This section should be the longest of your report.

  • Summary: Step 6

  • References

Your report should be 3–4 pages in length using 12-point fontdouble-spacing, and one-inch margins.  Cite a minimum of three (3) sources using APA style (see Appendix B in the textbook for additional APA resources). Your report does not have to be in APA format—only your in-text citations and references do.
