In the story of “The Ransom of The Red Chief”, there is a conflict when the kidnapper Sam, Bill, and Terror realized they had a bigger problem having Johnny in their custody considering his hypersensitive nature and being stubborn. The Ransom of the Red Chief tells the adventures of two criminals, Bill and Sam. In a twisted ending, the kidnappers eventually pay the boy's father to take him back.   In the stories “The Last Leaf” and “The Ransom of Red Chief”, O’Henry uses conflict, character, and setting to tell stories about the human emotions of hope and terror.
