LL290 Literary Analysis Professor Charity Burns

Compare/Contrast Essay, Option 1: Comparing literary elements

Once you complete both Literary Analysis Sheets, you will use that information to prepare your compare/contrast essay. You will select three literary elements to compare and contrast between the two stories by your author.

Requirements:

The paper must be a minimum of 4.5 pages in length, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 point font. You must use at least 2 sources in addition to your stories. You MUST include at least one direct quotation or paraphrase in each body paragraph. All quotes and paraphrased information must be cited.

The essay will follow this structure

Paragraph 1: The Introduction: introduce your author briefly, using cited information from your author research. Then introduce the two stories you will compare and contrast, ending with a 3-part thesis that analyzes your three chosen literary elements.

Paragraph 2: Story 1/ First literary element in the thesis
Paragraph 3: Story 2/
First literary element in the thesis
Paragraph 4: Compare & contrast the use of the
first literary element in both stories

Paragraph 5: Story 1/ Second literary element in the thesis

Paragraph 6: Story 2/ Second literary element in the thesis

Paragraph 7: Compare & contrast the use of the second literary element in both stories

Paragraph 8: Story 1/ Third literary element in the thesis

Paragraph 9: Story 2/ Third literary element in the thesis

Paragraph 10: Compare & contrast the use of the Third literary element in both stories

Paragraph 11: The Conclusion: summarize your ideas about how the author uses the three elements and how these elements help to make the author’s work successful. Use a quotation from your research or stories to strengthen your conclusion.

  1. The Reference page should list the two stories and your other sources (such as those used in the introduction and conclusion). The reference page citations should be in APA style.

Minimum length: 4.5 pages + a reference page.

Maximum length: 7.5 pages + a reference page.

***Remember, this paper cannot simply tell WHAT the three literary elements are. You must analyze WHY these elements are important. What does the author use the literary elements to reveal?

Sample thesis statement:

In “The Story of an Hour” and “The Storm,” Kate Chopin uses settings, characters, and conflicts to reveal the depth of gender bias in her time and the effects society’s bias had on women.

Sample topic sentence:

In these stories, the setting shows the biased society of Chopin’s era and its negative impact on women’s lives.
