Department of Sociology and Criminology SOC3660 S ociology of Mental Disorder Study Question s Wednesday December 21 st , 2022 : 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM You are advised to integrate all material that you consider necessary to develop a complete answer, including course readings, lecture material, and class discussions . It is important to ensure that you define the terms/concepts used in your analysis and examples should be used to illustrate accordingly . It is also worth emphasizing that examples are not definitions. For the final exam , you are to a nswer two (2) essay questions which are of equal value. In both instances, you are required to critically examine the issues as they relate to mental disorder.

Your discussion must include a consideration of the insights that can be drawn from a sociologic ally informed position in understanding mental disorder . Two of the following four questions will be your final exam questions. At this stage in your studies, it is expected that you will take full advantage of having these question ahead of time and that you will take the initiative in exploring course materials for pertinent information . 1. How do gender differences in roles and statuses help us understand ment al disorder? Provide a focused discussion of the major role/status addressed by the contributors ( e.g., marital status, parenthood, socioeconomic status, etc . ) in the examination of the social origins of mental disorder. 2. Discuss the ways in which the primacy of psychiatry leads to the individualization and medicalization of human experience. What are the consequences of understanding mental disorder as a ‘personal struggle’ vs. a social problem ? 3. What is the role of mental health literacy in perpetuating or challenging t he narrative regarding mental illness/mental health? How does the perspective of the consumer/survivor/ex - patient contribute to the construction of mental health literacy? 4. Social integration and social connectedness play a prominent role in the potential development of mental disorder. Using examples discussed in class, explain the potential (positive and negative) consequences of social integration for mental health.
