Step 2: Choos e Essay Topics From your previous searches choose three topics pertai ning to biodiversity , sustainability , conservation or climate science on which you might like to write your essay. Ideally the topic is broad enough that you will not have an issue finding several articles inv olving your to pic, but narrow enough that you wi ll be able to focus the writing of your essay. For each of your three topics , find one arti cle from a peer -revi ewed jour nal. Create a d ocument listing your th ree prospective topics along with a summary of th e accompanying article and a proper citation of your source. This document must be submitted to UMLearn by Jan. 19 th (11:30am) Feedback will be provided on your three choices. Fro m those deemed viable you can choose your single essay to pic. Step 3: Essay Ou tline Draft an out lin e of your e ssay. The outli ne can be in point form, and not in complete sentences, but must highlight all the major ideas o f your essay in a logical order . This must include your proposed ti tle and an organization of your introduction, main b ody and conclusion and the ideas they will contain . Title, introduction, main body, conclusion and pro perly formatted citations). The more effort you put into t his first draft , the more likely you will get a good sc ore on the final submitted version which makes up the bulk of you r grade. This first draft will be reviewed by both your graders a nd your peers . I str ongly advise that you take adva ntage of these opport unities. The First Draft must be submitted to UMLearn by Mar. 2 nd (11:30am) . Additi onally , you must bring two printed co pies to class with you that day . It will be VERY IMPORTANT to attend class that day in order to be able to receive grades for the peer review portion of the essay assignment. Step 5: Peer Review In class on Mar . 2nd each student will be pa ired up with two other students in order to exchange physical copies of your first dra fts . Every student is required to person ally write a con cise comment ary /review of th eir own topic. 2. The length of the essay should be between 2000 and 3000 words (excluding the title and the refer ences) . This me ans that in order to receive full marks the essay may be no less than 2000 words, but also no more than 3000 , and that ag ain references do not factor into this word count. 3. The essay should b e dou ble -spaced, with 1 -inch margins , and 12 -point fon t. An easily legible font must be used, such as Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri or Cambria. Essay For mat: Titl e (<15 words ) Specific , yet info rmative. Introduction (2 -3 paragraphs) The essay should begin with broad s tatements, explanations and definitions to orient the reader . Then it should begin to move into more specific ideas and issues , without yet getting into the details that will be covered in the main body. Expl ain why the subject is important (ie . ratio nale /justification for investigation) and how you will be approaching your discussion of the issue. Finish your introdu ction with a clear questi on /statement that will be addressed in the essay (note : do NOT pose it as a question ending in a question mark) Main body (majority of the essay) The main body of the essay should in clude at least five di stinct points/observations /conclusions that are related to the subject matter and most importantly the question /statement you en ded your introduction with . Subheadings may help you divide these ideas but are not strictly necessary . Please DO NOT simp ly summarize ea ch of your sources as a single paragraph . Ideas from all of your ci tations should be well integrated to address the points within your main body. Although you must be careful not to misinterpret the findings o f yo ur sources, the best way to write a scientific essay is to organize your ideas freely in your own words fi rst, and then bring in your citations to refine your wording and explanations / provide evidence. You should almost never put a source in direct quotations, but should always seek to paraphrase their wording (ie. put it in your own words , but giving them credit as it is not your “original ” idea ). Although re ference s can also appear in your intr oduction an d conclu sion, almost all sentences in your main body should be properly cited. Again, however, make sure to interpret the literature from your own perspecti ve and give the reader a sense of integration, development and focus. Conclusions (1 -2 paragraphs) The c onclusion is oft en a single paragr aph that functions as a consoli dated summary of the arguments, patterns and relationsh ips that you p resented in the main body .
