Experiment with sustainability report


  • This assignment is an opportunity for students to explore ideas to improve social and ecological well-being. In particular, this assignment asks students to:

1) Do something extraordinary that enhances social and/or ecological well-being, and

2) Reflect on their experience.

    • The experiment may be something the student does independently from others, or something they do for others.

    • The experiment should typically last two weeks.

  • Submit to: “Assignments” on UM Learn (Assessments tab->Assignments)

    • File name: Your name

e.g., Your name: XYZ -> File name: XYZ.doc (docx) or XYZ.pdf

  • Everything must be in ONE file using Microsoft Word or PDF format (no other formats will be accepted). Please use Times New Roman 12-point font, 8 ½ x 11 page settings.

    • Maximum of 2 single-spaced pages. The page limit does not include the reference list, cover page or appendix.

  • Use APA style for your references.

  • Up to 10% of points can be deducted for failure to follow the formatting and style guidelines

The report should include the following:

  1. Introduction (4 points)

  • A brief introductory paragraph or two, describing:

  1. Your personal reasons for choosing this particular experiment.

  2. How this experiment is related to improving sustainability.


  1. Experiences during experiment, and why they were noteworthy (8 points)

1) Describe four or more experiences/events that happened during the experiment (e.g., reactions from others, unexpected challenges or joys, interesting stories)

2) Also, explain why they were noteworthy

  • Number each one from 1 to 4.

  1. Impact of the experiment and implications for your life going forward (14 points)

1) Describe how your experiment helps you improve sustainability

2) Describe four lessons you gained during/after the experiment. Also, explain how each lesson will influence your personal behavior/lifestyle going forward

  • Number each one from 1 to 4.

  • For each item above, lack of clarity/information will lead to a deduction of marks (25% to 50%).

  1. Appendix.

  1. Your report should be based on your “journal reflection entries” that you have written before and/or during the experiment.

  2. At the top of each entry include the date it was written

  3. Each entry should go beyond mere description of an event

  4. It should provide more details about your experience and some insight or reflection as to the “meaning” of the event.

  5. Attach at least four journal entries as appendix

    1. Take photos of the entries and include the photos in the report as appendix

  • Unclear description can lead to a deduction of marks (up to 50% of total marks)
