Written Assignment: Cultural Research Reaction Paper

For this assignment, you are a required to write a reaction paper. This reaction paper is a combination of a summary and your detailed, informed reaction to a Cultural Psychology research article of your choosing. Its purpose is to allow you to gain experience with the Cultural Psychology literature and demonstrate your ability to comprehend learning research.

Choosing an article

You may choose any research paper published within the last 10 years that is concerned with Cultural Psychology or cross-cultural research.

You are writing an academic paper, and as such must rely on academic references. This means that the papers to which you refer should appear in scientific, peer-reviewed journals. Magazines such as Scientific American or Newsweek are not appropriate choices fort this assignment. A textbook is also inappropriate. These works are secondary, not primary, sources; they report studies that were done by others. However, such sources are often good leads, suggesting avenues of investigation into the scientific literature.

The American Psychological Association (APA) PsycINFO database is the most comprehensive collection of psychology research; it is an excellent resource for finding journal articles. You can access PsycINFO via the College Library. If you are unsure of your article choice, please get in touch with me via email.

Writing your reaction

To successfully complete this assignment, you should carefully read the article. Go beyond highlighting important facts and interesting findings. Ask yourself questions as you read: What are the researchers’ assumptions? How does the article contribute to the field? Are the findings generalizable, and to whom? Are the conclusions valid and based on the results? It is important to pay attention to the graphs and tables because they can help you better assess the researchers’ claims.

  • The reaction paper should be no less than 2 pages, no more than 2.5 pages, and must include a summary of the article (e.g., purpose of the study, methods, results, conclusions), along with your reaction to or critique of the article.

  • Your summary of the article and critique of the article cannot be less than one page each.

  • Your summary should provide a thorough examination of the purpose of the study, research question(s), methodology, results, and conclusion.

  • Your critique cannot merely be ‘I agree with the authors,’ or 'this article as interesting.' Whether you agree or disagree with the authors' methods or findings, you must present an argument and provide supporting statements that reflect your knowledge of cross-cultural research, based on current readings and lectures.
