WHICH BOX DO I CHECK? Understanding Biracial and Multiracial Identity

By Pauline Danforth and Lavorial Salone

Everyday forms challenge us to choose a box. Those of us with multiracial and multiethnic backgrounds find this particularly challenging. Some of us are comfortable choosing one box, while others feel restricted by the choices. Checking one box puts us in one category, confining us to one identity and denying our other identities.

Our choices are influenced by our biological heritage, parental expressions of culture, our own participation in cultural events, group acceptance, and perception of others of who we are. Ethnic identity can be situational and it may change over time. Prejudice from others may cause an individual to subvert one identity and favor another. Adoption, remarriage of our parents, place of birth and residence may cause one to favor one identity. Our ethnic identity isn't necessarily that of our parents or of our children.

Read the brief descriptions of various multiracial individuals, and check a box for them. There are no right or wrong answers. Then write your responses to the discussion questions listed at the end of this activity. These questions are designed to stimulate a "cultural reflection" about the potential dilemmas that multiracial people face when forced to define their identity on someone else's terms.

    1. My name is Sara and I am twenty-nine years old. My parents adopted me in South Korea when I was 3 months old. My parents believe that my father was an American stationed in Korea and that my mother was his mistress. I assume that he was white since I have dark brown hair and fair skin. I grew up in a small northern Minnesota town with a population of about ten thousand people. My adoptive parents were Norwegian and Swedish. I never learned much about Korean culture but feel very comfortable with the Scandinavian family customs and traditions I experienced as a child. My husband and I met in high school, were married at the ages of eighteen and nineteen, and have two children. Jessica is four months old and Sean is two. My husband is also Norwegian and Swedish like my parents. I really don't know anything about my Korean heritage and really can't feel a connection. Which box should I check for myself, for my children?

      • White non-Hispanic

      • African American

      • Asian American/Pacific Islander

      • Hispanic

 Why?

My name is Jeremy and I am a student at a local community college. My father was African American and worked as a factory worker until he died at the age of sixty-two. My mother was born in Thailand but moved here with her brother when she was sixteen. I was very close to my mother and learned a lot about Thai culture from her. I also became fluent in the language because she would frequently converse with me in her native tongue when I was growing up. I look very much like my mother. People are always surprised when they learn that my father was African American because they think I look Asian or like someone from the Middle East. I love my father's family and spend some of my holidays with them but I also enjoy spending time with my mother's relatives. However, I feel more comfortable with my mother's family because they look more like my mother and myself.

Why?

    1. My name is Tessa and I am a single mother, age 30. My father is African-American and my mother is mostly American Indian with some Caucasian. I was raised by my grandmother who is Dakota and Ojibwe Indian, as well as French and German. My biological mother came and went in my life but never stayed long. I met my father only once when I was 16 years old. He met my mother when they were teenagers; he had lived in Minnesota briefly. As a child I danced in pow-wows with my grandmother and cousins. I am not enough Indian to be enrolled in any reservation. I have dark brown skin and eyes. I am studying to be a social worker because I want to help kids like myself overcome racial and economic barriers.

Why?

  1. Now, go back and TYPE/WRITE in capital letters the "label" you would have used if you didn't have to stick to the boxes available.

9.2 Reflection

  1. Was the above exercise easier to do when you could create your own label? Did you feel more comfortable with this option? Explain.

  2. What did you consider in choosing racial/ethnic identity for the individuals?

  3. How is biological heritage different from family heritage? How do these heritages differ from identity? How important is culture vs. biological heritage? Use Sara in #A as an example. Explain your answers.

  4. What are the criteria for considering someone to be 'Caucasian/White'? To be 'African American'? To be 'Asian American'? To be 'Hispanic American'? Are any of them determined by percentage of biological ancestry?

  5. When do you think it would be advantageous to choose one identity over another?

9.3  Write at least three pages (single-spaced) addressing the following questions regarding the models presented in Chapter 7. Apply one of the models of identity development to your own experiences.  Be sure to describe each stage and provide example(s) of each stage from your personal experience.

  • Do the Identity Development models presented the text make sense within your own experience and from observing others? Explain.

  • Do you have multiple cultural identities? If so, discuss what they are and how they have impacted your life at different times and in different situations.

  • Think of a disagreement/conflict that you have had with someone (or observed) in which this information would have helped you better understand the other person's point of view. Describe the situation. How could you have used this information to better respond in that situation?

Discussion

Which of the Identity Development models presented in the textbook makes sense within your own experience?

Exercise 8

Write an introductory paragraph that explains what an annotated bibliography is and distinguish the difference between summative and an evaluative annotation. The YouTube video is supposed to help you understand those differences. Write a practice annotation from one of the articles that you will use for Assignment 2 Annotated Bibliography. Provide the reference for your article and include an annotation that summarizes, evaluates, and/or discuss how it could relate to a research topic that interests you. Since this is a text submission, you will be restricted on your formatting.

Exercise 9

Locate 3 scholarly articles from the library to create an Annotated Bibliography. You may use the articles you found in Exercise 3 or choose new articles (or a combination thereof).

  • Include 3 scholarly articles

  • Format using APA style

  • Choose to do an evaluative or summative bibliography

Note: for this assignment, you may or may not have a reference list separate from your bibliography.

Review the online article below. Choose one of the studies to write about for this exercise. Write a 3-paragraph submission discussing the experiment you chose. Could the experiment be conducted today? Are there modifications that could made that would make it possible to follow ethical guidelines? What is your reaction to the experiment?

Exercise 10

Part 2: Find an experimental  or quasi experimental research study. Write a submission in D2L explaining the following:

  1. The independent variable

  2. Dependent variable

  3. Reliability

  4. Validity

  5. Were the experimenters careful about internal and external validity? Did you find any limitations?
