As-Is Process Flowchart Evaluation

Select a process from an organization you work for or are familiar with. You will use this process in your Week 2 and Week 4 Assignments as well.

The organization that I’m going with is the Steak 'n Shake Fast-food drive-through.

Create a flowchart of the as-is process using Microsoft® Word, PowerPoint®, Visio®, or Excel®. Insert your flowchart below this line.

Evaluate the efficacy of your process using process improvement techniques. Write your evaluation below this line.

The initial flowchart was simple and lacked the overall guest experience in a drive-through environment. Upon my evaluation, I realized that the fast-food drive-through procedure, however, might be made more effective and efficient by using a process improvement methodology such as the Kaizen methodology which uses the PDCA (plan, do, check, act) cycle and continuous improvement efforts, often known as continuous process improvement (MasterClass, 2022).

Determine how the process can be improved based on the results of your evaluation.

Based on my evaluation, the process can be improved by 1. Have employees confirm all orders to prevent extending service times brought on by changing incorrect orders to improve this procedure. 2. Employ an additional drive-through window to increase service efficiency and avoid serving customers contaminated food by staff members who have been taking payments. 3. To avoid delays brought on by errors and forgotten products, staff members should double-check orders before providing them to customers.

Define metrics and measure the current process. Insert the metrics and measures below this line.

Process metrics specify numerical and graphical measures of a process's performance and development (Nejmeh & Riddle, 2006). The drive-through process for the company should adhere to three metrics. 1. turnaround time, which will be assessed from the viewpoint of the customer rather than the viewpoint of the business. 2. Effectiveness, which gauges the disparity between anticipated and actual outcomes of a procedure. 3.Cycle Time is the total amount of time taken to execute a task.

Use process improvement techniques to improve the process. Create a flowchart of the improved process using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Visio, or Excel. Use your professional judgment to ascertain how the future process will perform according to your metrics. Insert new flowchart below this line.

Summary

Write a 350-word executive summary that includes the following:

  • A brief description of the process based on the flowchart of processes current state

  • The results of your process evaluation and how the weak points can be strengthened. Include a description of the process improvement technique(s) used.

  • A brief description of process improvements based on the process of the future state

  • How you anticipate the future process will perform based on metrics used to evaluate process current state

  • A description of your process improvement project to achieve the process future state

Insert your summary below this line.

Process based on the flowchart of processes current state.

The process flow chart is currently under a continuous improvement model. The continuous improvement strategy decreases the fear factor and accelerates improvement by approaching change in tiny, gradual steps (Millard, 2022).

Results of the process evaluation, weakness to be strengthened and improvement technique.

Receiving your food and/or beverages as quickly as possible is the main objective of the fast-food drive-through method. One of the inefficiencies that may be improved when the consumer places their order is for the employee to repeat the order back to the customer and provide a total so that the customer can have their payment method ready when they go to the payment window. Another identifiable weakness, rather than having the employee hand the consumer their food or drink. Before presenting the order to the customer, it is crucial for the employee to double-check it. This will help to avoid delays brought on by errors and forgotten items.

How you anticipate the future process perform based on metrics Regular performance measurement is a crucial step in ensuring a process is operating as intended. Process performance metrics provide information on a process's performance by measuring several process attributes. As a result, the future approach would be driven by two metrics. Efficiency is the first. Being able to complete the task accurately is just as vital as being able to serve the consumers fast. The second future process is takt time. Companies that incorporate takt time into their organization benefit in a variety of ways: 1. The company will become more efficient, and training times will decrease. 2. Less mistakes will be made, and the overall quality will improve (WorkClout, 2021).

Improvement project to achieve the process future state. Using designated parking spaces or a second lane where orders can be delivered is one of the things that should be improved to prevent drive-thru traffic jams. Another objective is to calculate the service speed of each order. This idea will enable you to set service time standards and analyze the impact of process modifications on your service delivery efficiency and accurately. All staff members need to be aware of the defined service time objectives.
