CDI Performance Assessment

Clinical documentation integrity (CDI) is a key component of the revenue cycle. To provide direction for a CDI program’s development and growth, management should regularly evaluate its performance. In this assignment, you will evaluate the performance for the inpatient cardiovascular department (MDC 5).

Instructions:

1. Review the facility data for the cardiovascular department in the file AB202019_Ch12_CDI Performance Assessment Data File.xlsx. In this spreadsheet, data are provided for the following metrics:

a. Review rate

b. Query rate

c. Physician response rate

d. Physician impact on MS-DRG rate

e. CDI intervention denial rate

f. Case-mix index

2. If you have questions about any of the rates included in the data file, reference the AHIMA Clinical Documentation Improvement Toolkit (2016), available in the AHIMA HIM Body of Knowledge (http://bok.ahima.org/). Access to this document requires AHIMA membership. If you are not a member of AHIMA, contact your instructor for assistance.

3. Analyze the data. Develop insights.

4. Prepare an annual report for the revenue cycle committee. Your report should include a summary of the CDI performance for the past year. Tables and graphs should be included when warranted. Include the insights your team has developed throughout the report. For example, do not simply report that the CMI is 2.1349. Your report should include a discussion of aspects of CDI performance that have impacted the CMI. Your report should include a section that discusses possible actions designed to improve CDI performance during the upcoming year.
