Currently, Uber drivers in the United States are considered to be independent contractors, whereas, in Europe they are considered employees of the company. After much litigation in the U.K., the courts determined that all Uber drivers were to be considered employees, and therefore granted additional worker’s benefits under current labor laws. Because there is a considerable push in the United States for increased wages and protection under federal labor laws, I do believe that there will be a continued interest to change the ruling through government lobbying to mimic the business model now used in the U.K. While many drivers value the flexibility that comes with being an independent contractor, others may place a higher value on benefits and overtime, especially as a recession looms.
