Critique of a Mission Statement

“Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy through increasingly affordable electric vehicles in addition to renewable energy generation and storage.” (tesla.com). Tesla.

While Tesla’s mission statement accurately describes the goal of the company, they’re missing a few crucial components of an effective mission statement. A few ways Tesla’s mission statement can be improved is by including the target market, technological uses, basic beliefs and values, the value of employees, competitive advantages, and the importance of environmental concerns. “Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s (3) transition to sustainable energy through increasingly affordable electric vehicles (2) in addition to renewable energy generation and storage. (5)” This mission statement lacks six components: Customers (1), Technology (4), Philosophy (6), Distinctive Competence (7), Public Image (8), and Employees (9).

The first revision I would make to this mission statement would be to add a sentence about the customers. Instead of the opening line being “Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy”, it could sound like this: “Our mission is to revolutionize transportation and energy systems, placing our customers at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to providing exceptional experiences and innovative solutions that exceed our customers’ expectations.” I believe this is a much stronger opening line that would inform the customers that they are of utmost importance to the company.

Another revision I would make is adding a sentence regarding the employees of the company. I would add a sentence like this: “We strive to keep an environment where our employees can thrive and make a meaningful impact. We value the dedication and expertise of our employees, recognizing their vital role in driving our mission forward.” Including the employees in the mission statement is important because it shows them that their role is essential to the company, and in turn encourages greater productivity, employee engagement, and employee retention.

Including environmental concerns within the mission statement is important because it provides the organization and its stakeholders with an understanding of what’s important and what the company can do to protect the world. I would add a sentence like this: “Through the widespread adoption of sustainable energy, we aim to reduce global dependence on fossil fuels, combat climate change, and preserve the planet for future generations.”

At Tesla, our mission is to revolutionize transportation and energy systems around the world (3), placing our customers at the heart of everything we do (1). We are dedicated to designing and producing cutting-edge electric vehicles (2) and renewable energy solutions that surpass expectations in performance, efficiency, and accessibility. We value the dedication and expertise of our employees (9), recognizing their vital role in driving our mission forward. Driven by our commitment to innovation (7), we strive to push the boundaries of technology (4), continuously improving our products and services (5). Through the widespread adoption of sustainable energy, we aim to reduce global dependence on fossil fuels (6), combat climate change, and preserve the planet for future generations. (8)
