Coop Business Structure

A worker-owned business can go either way. People have the opportunity to run the business as their own. If these workers are motivated to work towards success, then I agree with this structure. It all depends on what types of workers the company has, people who want to work towards success, or people who simply don’t care where the company goes. Several companies are shown in the video that started out as worker-owned businesses are still very successful years and years later.

An example of a worker-owned business is shown with the coffee roasting business. This company is purchasing products from farmer cooperatives from all around the world and processing and packaging it to sell largely to consumer cooperatives all around the world. The video mentions the business started in 1994 with only ten employee owners and today they have over 100 employee owners. Growing in sales and overall growth, this company has only been working towards success.

Another example that supports my opinion is shown through METIS Construction, worker owner being Nils Christian. A few contractors reconstructed a business to turn it into what it is today. A bunch of talented people got together and worked towards their goals. There were a lot of efforts, these individuals were motivated to be successful. Everybody steps up when they have the sense of ownership, everybody takes responsibilities and creates an appreciative and enjoyable working environment. People enjoy working together to reach their goals.

The last supporting detail backing up my opinion is Cabot Creamery Cooperative in Vermont. This business started with practically nothing. They didn’t really have a market to sell their products too so they began finding ways to get it to Boston, then to New York. Today, this creamery is one of the largest suppliers to manufacturers. It is incredible to see where these companies started, ever knowing their future.

Many companies all around the world are worker owned, more than you probably think. It is interesting to learn about these different worker owned businesses and how they started. Not knowing years later, they would be huge suppliers to the world. Starting with hardly any products and minimal employees, to having companies all around the world.
