The main purpose of this episode is to investigate Amazon, including how the empire was built and at what cost, and whether or not domination was the idea behind the creation of Amazon. Areas being investigated include whether or not Amazon taking over the world is a positive or negative thing, questioning those who run the company, and whether or not people are okay with one company winning capitalism. A main argument included in this episode claimed, “Amazon is the great disrupter, from books, to retail, to grocery stores.” In the video, Jeff Bezos is asked how much of the internet he runs. Bezos replies with, “That’s a good question, um, it’s a lot, though.” Another main argument included in this episode explained, “Everything that is admirable about Amazon, is also something that we should fear about it.” Jeff Bezos has created such a powerful and successful empire, and is not finished yet. The final main argument included, “The way Jeff Bezos sees it is that consumerism is an example of how today’s society lives better than our parents and grandparents did. And he wants future generations to continue to have an increasingly better lifestyle.”

A main argument included in this episode claimed, “Amazon is the great disrupter, from books, to retail, to grocery stores.” In the video, Jeff Bezos is asked how much of the internet he runs. Bezos replies with, “That’s a good question, um, it’s a lot, though.” Amazon started out as a tiny, obscure novelty, and investigators in this episode now found it difficult to imagine how the entire universe that Amazon now dominates did not exist before. It has become such a large and successful empire, and is impacting all parts of the world. In the end, Bezos’s ultimate goal is to continue making life better for those generations to come. As Amazon is described as a great disrupter, this is not in a negative way, but rather in a way to show how powerful it has been.

Another main argument included in this episode explained, “Everything that is admirable about Amazon, is also something that we should fear about it.” Jeff Bezos has created such a powerful and successful empire, and is not finished yet. Considering Bezos has started small, and became this large, people may become fearful of what other effects his company could have. Bezos is working towards improving life for the generations to come, which may be a scary idea for people to understand. Although, in the end, it is all for a good reason.

The final main argument included, “The way Jeff Bezos sees it is that consumerism is an example of how today’s society lives better than our parents and grandparents did. And he wants future generations to continue to have an increasingly better lifestyle.” This helps people to better understand the ideas behind Amazon and how the end goal is not just for Bezos to make money, but for Bezos to help create a better world and life for all future generations. This statement shows how thoroughly they have investigated Amazon and that they have come up with a conclusion.

Overall, all of the ideas above have assisted in the investigation of Amazon. As Bezos explains in the video, “We have to save this planet, and we shouldn’t give up a future for our grandchildren’s grandchildren of dynamism and growth. We can have both.” What began as something so small, has now turned into something so big. This video included many great points about the concerns with Amazon, but they only supported the end goal even more. Personally, I greatly enjoyed this video. It included a lot of important information that I never knew and never would’ve known if it weren’t for this video. I now feel as if I have a lot of insight into the company and the man behind it all. I believe that Jeff Bezos is a great example of what anyone can achieve on their own.

Chapter 11, Discussion Question 2, "The chapter describes the role of culture in the successful implementation of strategy. Consider an employment experience of your own or of someone you have observed closely. Describe to the best of your ability the values, norms, and artifacts of the organization. What was the socialization process of embedding the culture? Do you consider this to be an example of an effective culture for contributing to the organization's competitive advantage? Why or why not?".

I am currently an accountant at Dutchland LLC and I have worked there for about 8 months. The company values a community/family environment between employees, integrity, quality, professionalism, and to enhance their employees quality of life. Personally, I find these values to hold true and I think it is very prevalent in the office. When I first started working there, everybody was extremely welcoming, friendly, and to this day I have never had a bad exchange with anyone there. I have made plenty of mistakes at work and I'm always met with insightful instructions instead of anger or frustration. I believe this comfort and family type atmosphere comes from when the company was founded. When employees are met this way in the office, they carry it on to other new employees.

I do believe this culture of family in the office, casual work environment, and great benefits absolutely contributes to our competitive advantage. It's pretty crazy but I have never heard anyone at work complain about their job, or count down until it's time to go home. Myself and everyone else that works for Dutchland genuinely care about their jobs, their coworkers, and doing best by the company. Everybody has the same motivation and wants the company to succeed, and this culture makes all of the employees work extremely hard and there is a strong synergy in the office.

My Personal Mission and Vision Statement would include being a confident and compliant individual while working to improve myself. I want to be able to help people that are associated with me in several different manners such as an emotional manner. I want to be emotionally and mentally stronger than I ever have been before.

I am a very independent person, but I still want to be helpful to others around me whether that it by job giving or other ways of helping individuals. I would like those who are associated with me to feel extremely comfortable, encouraged, and motivated in every aspect of their life. I want others to feel successful about their mental and educational levels as well as working to feel good about themselves financially and spiritually. I believe that helping others around me will help build myself emotionally and mentally and lead to a great future. My personal mission and vision statement is suitable for me for several different reasons and I hope to follow it to help lead me to a strong future.

I have always lived a life of not needing others for help and being independent when it came to needing help with something. I am also one to use my money appropriately and to never spend money more than needed. Using money in a smart way has helped me financially as I have a successful credit score with credit cards that are always paid off in a timely manner. But, it is important to realize that there is always the opportunity for something to go wrong and that you need to prepare yourself to have plans to ensure that you will still continue to be on the right path. Sometimes you do not want help, but it is important to help introduce yourself to asking for help and being there for others who may need help with something.
