Setting Up Your Moral System

INSTRUCTION:
This assignment is an opportunity to reflect on and articulate your underlying assumptions about morality and its role in your life. You also will reflect on and articulate what moral principles or moral orientation guides your decision-making process.

Please answer the following:

Basic Assumptions

“Setting Up a Moral System: Basic Assumptions & Basic Principles” / pages 4-9 & 26

List some of your basic assumptions regarding –

  • What is the purpose of morality in general and/or the value of having a moral theory in particular?

  • Which individuals have moral status (who should be included in our moral deliberations)?

  • Do all members of the moral community (those who deserve moral consideration) have an inherent value? If not, what determines an individual’s value?

  • Are there other basic assumptions that you are making?

Be sure to explain and give reasons for your responses to the above questions.

Basic Moral Principles

“Setting Up a Moral System: Basic Assumptions & Basic Principles” / pages 9-18 & 26

List what you believe would be a good set of moral principles to guide your moral deliberations and choices.

Be sure to explain and give reasons for the principles you list here.

The Priority of Your Basic Moral Principles

“Setting Up a Moral System: Basic Assumptions & Basic Principles” / pages 18-22 & 26-27

Looking back at your basic set of principles, are some more fundamental or important than others? If there is a conflict between the various principles in a given situation, which principles should be considered first? In Thiroux’s article, he divided his principles into categories to help him prioritize some principles over others. Feel free to use that approach if it helps you in deciding how to prioritize your basic moral principles.
