Staff Wellness Case Study

Today is Friday – and that means staff meeting day! Your school staff team meets to discuss a variety of issues every Friday from 2:30-4:00 pm. Your spouse’s school, also at the elementary level, has their staff meetings on Tuesday mornings at 7:30 am.

This week’s agenda has “Mental Health Day” as the main topic. The Staff Wellness Committee is starting to describe the full day of wellness activities they’ve planned (in conjunction with the Parent and Student Councils) for the following Thursday.

A colleague leans over towards you and mutters, “I’m taking a mental health day on Thursday.”

On the other side of you, someone exclaims, “I don’t have time to develop an hour-long session on mindfulness!”

Someone else chimes in that “the research says that a single day makes no difference to lifelong health!”

You open the Google doc made by the Staff Wellness Committee, and realize (with horror), that your assignment is to teach volleyball for an hour. Before you can stop yourself, you yelp, “I HATE volleyball.”

The Wellness Chair looks flustered. The committee looks defeated.

The principal stands up and says, “Look, this day is happening no matter what, so let’s get it going.”

You glance and around the room. No one looks enthusiastic.
