Variables and Design Elements

Original Research Question: Can the loss of taste in Parkinson’s disease be preventable or reversible?

Refined Research Question: How does the presence of other comorbidities, such as hyposmia or dysphagia, influence the potential preventability or reversibility of taste loss in Parkinson's disease, and can multidisciplinary approaches be effective in addressing these interconnected symptoms.

Population of Interest:

Study population, sample size, sex, age, vulnerable populations if any.

Sample Size Determination:

Statistical methods and/or formulas for determining the sample size for the study.

Proposed Research Design:

A brief description of the type/design of research to be conducted (e.g., randomized, placebo-controlled, masking, parallel group, matching, cross-over, open-label, dose-escalation, dose-ranging, study arms, randomization, schedule of interventions and assessments.).

Proposed Method(s):

Overall statistical approach to the analysis of the study.

Test Statistic (if quantitative):

Determines whether your null hypothesis can be rejected ex: X2, t-test, z-score, ANOVA.

Independent Variables (include relevant demographic variables):

Variables whose values can not be manipulated by other variables in the study; causes a change in the dependent variable.

Dependent Variable:

Specific measurement or observation used to assess the effect of the study intervention (e.g., specific laboratory tests that define safety or efficacy, clinical assessments of disease status, assessments of psychological characteristics, assessments of individual or group health behaviors, assessments of healthcare visit attendance, etc.).

Hypothesis:

How the independent variables are acting on the dependent variable(s) Null Hypothesis:

Total Study Duration:

Time from when the study opens to enrollment until completion of data analysis
