Valerie,

The Power Verbs activity highlighted several unsuspecting ways that we can harness words to communicate more powerfully in a professional context. Through my experience with the activity, I realized that it can be easy to get lost in the semantics of synonyms and syntax. For instance, the first question in the activity asked us to choose between the words “supervise” and “led.” Both words can be considered power verbs depending on the context or the object of the verb and how they are modified. This can also be contingent upon the readers’ perception of each action; personally, I feel that the words “lead” or “led” communicate more active engagement than “supervise.” Nevertheless, the activity demonstrated that it is essential, ultimately, to focus on presenting your work— your actions—in the best light. Furthermore, Sommer (2023) notes the importance of these phrasing tactics to the modern job search, as artificial-intelligence engines are often employed to parse out specific keywords in a résumé or CV. I will definitely be using the tips and guidelines provided this week in the next revision of my résumé. Working consistently on how to best represent your skills and abilities is a crucial component of professional development (Ayekele et al., 2019).

Danelle,

  • Participate in the Active Verbs activity in the topic "Writing a Winning Resume" of the Unit 2 Learning Content.

    • Discuss your experiences as you worked through that activity.

      • My experience as I worked through the activity was enlightening. It showed me various ways to change words to "power verbs" and increase my resume from "eh" to "outstanding".

    • Describe the question in the activity for which you felt least prepared and explain why it was difficult for you.

      • The question in the activity that was most difficult for me would be when asked to pick a word to replace "supplied" information to others. The options were all great but it was difficult to narrow down which one was best for this scenario.

    • Describe the most important takeaway from the experience.

      • The most important takeaway from the experience for me would be to think logically about which verbs had the most impact and powerful meaning. It is also important to take out those not needed words that are just space savers. The resume should be straight to the point and easy to read.

  • Detail how you will use what you learned in this unit and the Active Verbs activity to promote yourself in your cover letter, resume, and responses to interview questions. Use 2 external sources to support your response.

    • I learned various things in this unit. I will use this information to guide me when reviewing and revamping my resume. While it is important to use the Active Verbs activity and put it into action while editing my resume, it is also important to choose the best format and include the necessary components such as the headers and summaries for sections as indicated (Expert, 2023). "Use your resume to highlight items that indicate you are a good worker, are qualified for the position and bring desirable skills to the job," (Key Elements of a Resume | DO-IT, n.d.).
